Try getting a 135i out the door for less than $40K.

You'll most likely have to order one and wait, or take European delivery (not a drawback at all if you can afford to wait).

The $35K 135i will not have any options in it. Leather like or cloth seats, no nav, no sunroof etc.

Meanwhile there is a good chance a fully loaded '09 STi with nav and AWD will be around $34K.

It's a tough choice no doubt.

Gentlemen, there is only one solution.

Once these cars drop, go thee to thy nearest BMW and Subara dealerships and take a few test drives.

If you have a choice between two performance cars and one of them looks like a POS the choice should be obvious...unless of course you like driving in a POS then I guess the choice is less obvious. Either way, it's a choice between a BMW and a Suby...no contest, the BMW wins.

Does your arm get tired painting with that broad brush? LOL.

It IS a contest. I can afford a 335, 135i, Evo X, 09 STi, 09 Camaro, used C5 Z06s and whatever other high performance car that will be on sale in the next 18mos. for <45K.

You know why an STi is currently in my driveway and on my shopping list?

Because it is versatile, fast, reliable and unique.

The fact that this innocuous little sedan (soon to be hatch) can hang with the big boys, carry lots of stuff and go in the snow, while keeping my maintenance & fuel costs down has earned it my consideration.

As for the looks, I happen to like the looks of my current STi AND those of the new one. I'm not concerned about what my neighbors or colleagues think - after all they are pretty much sheep

"You paid $31K for that little car? Why?? And what is that spoiler for?"

"Don't concern yourself over it, you wouldn't understand.....Ooh look over there! The new Suburban! Being driven by Britney Spears, eating the new KFC Famous Bowl!**"

**while their back is turned, onelove uses the opportunity to escape the presence of sheep person.

so that's not a concern either.

I like ALL high performance cars. The purposefulness of the engineering is what appeals to me, not just swoopy bodywork.

Just my .02.

If you bought the subaru for the looks alone than you made a mistake. I have the same year as you and color and I love my car it may not be the best looking car out there but makes up for it in every other category. I actually really like the way it looks(better at some angles than others)it looks very functional. That BMW 135 looks like an old persons saggy skin. Like it's going to droop off the side of the car. SUBBIE FOR THE WIN!!! Look at my SIG picture try doing that in a BMW.

I'm sure a BMW could do that just fine. You just wouldn't want to do it in a BMW.

so far the best reply ,imho..
as an old bimmer owner (drove e36m3,e46 325) all i can say is BMW is a good brand well balanced, smooth ride cars with reliability issues of course ,for who might wanna keep the car after that 4yrs or 50k miles period (bone stock of course ,modding a bimmer is a diffrent story you can spend 10grand and have ..let's say , 10-20 more hp) ..but for some reason STI on the other hand, puts a lot more smile on my face.. i used to drive plenty of german and other european cars , since i'm from europe,lol..all i can say is this BEAST is the best car i've ever owned in every aspects... rally oriented, lightweight,EZ on mods, low depreciation,reliability,AWD,3 limited slip diffrential (only m series come with lsd and just 1),DCCD,better seats, better wheels, better brakes.. who cares if a bmw or audi has a better interior? not me.. oh well..not to mention this is not a "boutique" car ..i like my car even though i could have purchased some "entry level luxury sport" car like infiniti g35,lexus is350 or bmw 335 ..conclusion was pretty simple after i test drove all..
get whatever suits you better and call it a day peace

I recently went and test drove 2 e46 m3s, and have been doing alot of reading on the 135 since I first read about it in autoweek. Everyone knows there are differences between BMW and Subaru, and those differences are vast. They both target different markets and have completely different approaches, whether it be all wheel drive or rear wheel drive sport thrills while having a smooth ride. Truth be told, for me at least, that my suby feels a hellofalot stronger than that e46 m3 did. The M was awsome by all means, but something about the shifter and clutch I just don't like about BMWs. They almost feel lazy or sloppy, kind of like an afterthought to the quality build of everyhing else. And yes the 135 will no doubt be sweet, and be built with quality, but I feel like you could run into alot of those on the road and never even have the other driver flash his lights at you if you had the same car. When you see another STI on the road, there is a sense of mutual respect and admiration you provide and receive from other STI drivers. In the end, completely different cars but with the same purpose of putting a smile on the drivers face. I think the Suby can keep the smile on your face longer and more cheaply, and probably even faster.

the thing is with the 135 is the TT engine, thats already in the 335 and i hear is somewhat easily modable. But the chassis of the 135 is built off the outgoing (old) 3 series. And its also 200-300 pounds lighter than the 335.

http://www.rsportscars.com/eng/cars/bmw_135i.asp
it says 3438 lbs but i 'd expect to see it 3500ish ,b/c of the added weights are plenty of bimmers.. for
instance you can look at this website

http://www.roadandtrack.com/assets/d...R_BMW_335i.pdf
curb weight =3635lbs test weight =3815 almost ,almost 200 lb heavier than expected....

speaking of moddinng... in a local meet i met this guy who has an 335i coupe ended up paying almost 5k for a header...which gave him 15-20 more hp
just for a reference
