The 135 is cheaper and a couple hundred pounds lighter.

Depends on what you want.

Get the bmw if you want luxury and performance. (boring to me, but I understand why some people like that)
Get the Subaru if you want raw perfrormance that isn't a status symbol.

I don't think either car is a looker, but for me to drive a boring luxury car it would have to be gorgeous. The beamer is far from that in my opinion.

Between the '08 STi or 135, I would have to go 135 as long as BMW keeps the price at lower to mid 30's. If they start at higher 30's, the Sti would be a better deal.
With 300 fpt torque at 1,400 rpm I think the 135i will feel a lot like my old Mustang Cobra pulling in 2nd & 3rd gears. Just tap the gas when going around a corner & slide to where you want to be. The better weight distribution should overcome the problem of starting uphill from a stop light on wet pavement that I had on my front-heavy mustang. Although the 4 wd on my R32 and TT 3.2 has been enjoyable I miss the rear wheel drive & low speed torque of the mustang.

The STI is very much a status symbol. Maybe not symbol of rich, but it sure is a status symbol of something. It sure as hell gets a lot more attention than the BMW 135i will ever get. And a 1-series BMW does not symbolize rich anyway. If anything it says "wanted a BMW but couldn't afford a nice one."

Haha it's like the stigma attached to buying a Boxster - no one ever considers it a "real" Porsche unless it is a 911. The Cayman is kind of in the middle now.

I dunno if this is posted already or not, but Edmund's Inside Line just did a review on the 135i. Here it is: First Drive: 2009 BMW 135i.*

Looks good.

Notice that stock STi and Evo performance is better, though I think the power will be much easier to get with the 135i with that super wide power band (295 lb/ft tq at 1300 RPM). I'm not surprised the 135i sounds good on paper.

I still prefer the raw performance of an STi or Evo. Just for personal and practical preferences.

The only reason an STi or EVO is faster then the 135i in a straight line is because of the AWD clutch drop which gives the AWD drive car the holeshot.
A 5-60 mph street start is more important to people who want their clutch and drive train to last. The 335i coupe does it in 5.5 where the 06 Sti in 5.8. Being that the 135i should be lighter or the same weight as the 335i with the same gearing should still be faster then the STi or EVO on the street.

Having 295 lb-ft of torque below 2 grand where the STI doesn't get 300 lb-ft until 4 grand is the difference here.

I would love the torque of the Bimmer but that being said I would still take the STi. Don't know why, probably faster on the race track more raw and more fun in bumpy back roads where BMWs bottom and STis own. And the fact the STi will most likely be cheaper.

Then I would save for the new M3 and have the best of BMW and Subaru

btw, you guys that think the 135 should be the same price as the sti are in for a little surpise. you should be able to get a base 135 for about the same price but once the options are added youre looking at closer to 40k. my 335i came out to 50k before taxes (fully loaded).

While I generally agree with what you are saying, you've got to remember that 5.5 is under perfect conditions. Most roads that I drive on are far from perfect; you've got broken pavement, uneven surfaces, loose gravel/dirt, etc. Then you have varying weather, including rain and snow. There are very few things that can beat an STI off the line on wet or less-than-perfect roads.

In a real race situation, like a drag strip, the point is moot because both cars are going to launch.

What do you think the STI is going to cost? With options, you'll be right there are 40K with it as well.
