I don't know if this has been posted, and I'm not about to read through 27 pages of this thread to see if it has.

Edmunds has a pretty funny article talking about the reaction of the Subaru community (namely, NASIOC) to the new Impreza lineup:

I wish I knew who designed this utter piece of crap. If I could, I would wack him over the head with a baseball bat. The WRX looks like a Corolla now, how sad. So much for my enthusiasm in Subaru. You guys totally lost it now.

agreed, it's an atrocity. The "inside line" makes nice points about how awful this thing is going to fly. I understand that we (subaru community) have griped about past cars not really looking "good," but this is just way out of that league. This car is truly awful, lighter or not. Goodbye Subaru as a contender in the sport compact market for at least 4 years unless they pull a VW and revise the car in a year and totally ground up redesign in 3 years. They might as well cut losses early and not lose too much of Toyota's money with this pile of garbage.

Thats awesome that our voice is being noticed. It'd be nice if this made it to japan and they get full wind of the review that we give their new "design" if you can call it that.

Oh man, I was really pissed at Subaru until I saw the Legacy STi pic. It reiterates to me that Subaru is capable of beautiful design. It also makes me wonder what they were thinking with the WRX. They have examples of attractive cars, the RA-R, the LG STi, so why did they choose the carolla as a styling que? It boggles my mind.

Good research from that writer overall - glad to see it.

I guess I'll pile on and be glad I got an 06 - but I bet the car does grow on us - we are rather hopeless at times.

I'm hoping Subaru will pull a Mitsubishi move for the next STI. Take a look at the differences between a regular Lancer and the Evo -- one looks dorky, one looks mean. Until now Subaru has only done minor bodywork changes between the WRX and the STI, perhaps in 2008 there will be more substantial differences. We can hope .

Much as I usually dislike journalists reporting opinions as "news", in this case I not only think it's appropriate, I'm all for it. Reaction of the Subaru faithful should weigh heavily on the minds of the Subaru designers.

As for where my money will go, well ... I always keep in mind what I would buy if (heaven forbid) I suddenly had to replace my STi. I had high hopes for the new design prior to its release, but now I have to say that I'm far more likely to buy a Mazdaspeed 3 or an Evo X (assuming the Evo is faithful to the concepts we've all seen).

Maybe this has been asked before, but I've never heard an answer:

Why doesn't Subaru hire the designer(s) of the GC8 Impreza and the 22B to pen a replacement? Any model that has such a devoted following and still looks that good after 14 years is worth trying to emulate, in my humble opinion....

So, to sum up:

2008 WRX =

Evo X (concept pics) =

Mazdaspeed 3 =

GC8 Impreza =

Legacy GT (though more car than I really need, and not as tossable) =

I think it looks pretty nice. If it looks like the graphic above, it sure beats the new impreza wrx hb.
