Default 2008 Powerplant

So. Deep down, all of us really hope that, not only with a complete ground-up redesigned Impreza for 2008, we’ll see a power increase too.
My question is, how do YOU think Subaru might accomplish this.
Mitsu used MIVEC on the IX’s, for example.
Yes, a twin-turbo H6 would have it’s benefits, but is that realistic? What would it do to the car weight-wise? How high could it rev? Etc.

What are some possible ways Subaru may improve the EJ27? What’s the next step up from a VF39?

The STi already has MIVEC-it's called AVCS. Basically the same thing-it advances or retards cam and ignition timing. I think they will just up the boost to make more power.

I would saaaaaaaaaaaaaaay ACVS on both intake and exhuast cams. I think that would be good for 10-20HP.

I think that Subaru is basically going to tweak the H4 (Standard STi Engine) with better internals...and pop on a bigger turbo......maybe slap on a better flowing exhaust....prob keep the TMIC, but the FMIC would be ideal. I think thats the way they may approach it...being that they can use the same engine that the STi's have now, and by tweaking the ecu after the bigger turbo/fmic/engine interanls, they should def be able to get some serious power out of it. They better Mistu is up'ing their power!

I think they will keep most things as is, but I could see them bumping the hp with revised cam profiles and a little ECU work.

Forged internals and more boost, and a little tweak on the ecu. And hopefully better seats!

so the 08 is supposedly going to be a hatchback last i read?

i think they would ditch the vf39 for something a little bigger if they want more power...not much else they can do as far as being controlled by emissions...probably only ECU tuning like cobb stage 1.

I think that's a lock. Just look at their WRC competition. As for power increases, it may be well to remember that there are two sides to the power/weight ratio. As Colin Chapman said, "to go faster, add lightness."

I'd sure be into the lighter side of things. How though? They already put light glass in the car, aluminum hoods... I couls see aluminum fenders and roof maybe, but that's only a few pounds. To keep the chassis stiff (torsional rigidity) I don't see where they can shed a whole lot. Maybe get those 2-ton seats outa there? I think the EVO's slightly smaller rotors help it out.

As far as I've seen in the WRC the last few years, Loeb's and Gronholm's cars are in fact better cars (more nimble). Suabru has got to do something to get on the top again. It can't be ALL driver. Maybe we need to sign Loeb on, hehe.

I think they may actually need do the hatchback thing.
