What We Know: Subaru is giving the sporty Impreza a full-out redesign some two years after the minor updates which are due to appear on the 2006 Impreza. Considerably different than the current model, the 2008 Subaru Impreza will be based on a shorter version of the Subaru Legacy platform. Additionally, Subaru has decided to start building this vehicle in the United States, as opposed to Japan, at its Lafayette, Indiana plant.
so they are going to be built in the US now

I'm 99% sure that the STi will still be built in Japan.

Even IF the base Impreza is built in the U.S., I would guess the STI will still be built in Japan. It's not uncommon for performance versions of cars to be built in a different plant than the standard versions.

That would raise costs though. I'm sure the Z06 is built at the same plant as the C6.
Anyway, that is great news. Now we can have a national gathering and one of the days can revolve around a plant tour

I refer to cars with a J as the first letter in the VIN as "cowbell". I will not accept a car from a Japanese company built anywhere else than Japan. Period.

Nissan Armada no cowbell
Honda Accord no cowbell

If it's an American car, fine, but just no, no no no.

Who do you want building your fancy Japanese car with fancy Japanese-made instruction booklets. A robot or Earl from Indianna, a union worker, Friday at 4:50pm? Think about it! (not that there's anything wrong with Indianna, or the name Earl)
Edit: I also didn't even notice that the city was in Indianna, what a guess eh?

That's not to say we can't build our own cars, but have you ever read Japanese instruction manuals? All your manufacturing are belong to us.

+2 for you for owning up to making a mistake! Good man.

Anyways...back on topic

I still don't see what the big deal is if it's built here. It means lower costs for us, right?

I wouldn't be suprised if they made the STi here...

BMW made the z3 in South Carolina and when they decided to make a M roadster and M coupe...that's right, South Carolina! The STi isn't really that different from an Impreza to deserve it's own factory unless they're already making them in Japan anyways.

Maybe they'll leave some of the random japanese lettering around the car just for that authenic feel

THey'll have to make room then.. Toyota signed an agreement to have Fuji Heavy Industries built Toyotas for them at the Lafayette plant.

I work for Denso who makes electronic components for subarus. We manufacture airbag ecu's, engine ecu's, etc. for subarus but no imprezas. As far as quality I don't think there would be a huge difference in quality there might be a few hiccups in the beginning but you better believe that plant will be heavily Japanese when the Impreza is run. That would be to ensure quality. That is how things work in Japanese companies that manufacture in the United States. However, I think they will make the STi in Japan though( I could be wrong). Sorry for the book.
