It's a code that defines the chassis type. 02-07 had a GD chassis and the 08's have 3 different chassis. The GE,GH,GR - which are Impreza Sedan, Impreza Hatch and STI hatch respectively. I think this is the first year for the STI to have it's own chassis designation, hence why people refer to the 08 STI as a GR.
