Default Kenwood head unit 08 wallpaper

I was playing around with the custom background feature of my Kenwood DNX-8120, which allows you to load a custom background onto the screen through the USB port only.

I found that you can have only 3 JPGs on the USB stick at a time or the system will not recognize and allow you to choose the backgrounds from the USB drive.

I found that the resolution that seemed to match the screen exactly is 480x270.

I have taken several pictures from these forums and the net and made some backgrounds -- the ones I made that looked decent (sized for the Kenwood screens) you can find here

Good work.. How bout a nice Subaru Graphic on a black background, with either STI at the bottom, or WRX.... If I knew how to make them, I would.....

<-----Has 8120 installed as well.

Yah, that would be nice, but I don't see any option to replace the dorky Kenwood blue startup screen.

Am I missing something?

You hold down the Function and Eject button and it puts you into the OEM/Background image options menu... Google it.

I did after writing that above.... So I can get it into the mode but the image I select doesn't stick when I reboot. I am thinking maybe the resolution needs to be a little less than what I am using (480x270).

Have you gotten this to succeed?

BTW here is the Subie logo @ 480x270...

I read 480 x 234 pixels on another forum, reposting instructions (which may or may not work):

Quote:
I'm not sure what's ideal, but the wallpaper option resizes them to fit the screen.
I found out there's an ability to change the startup screen also, but it doesn't resize.
I called Kenwood and here's the instructions they gave to me:

1. enter setup mode by:
- holding both SRC+EJECT and while holding it press the RESET button
- wait for the screen that displays:
- Kenwood Image
- OEM image
2. Connect USB that contains your customized startup screen (480 x 234 pixels (this was taken from another post that I found))
3. Select OEM Image
4. Select the file that you wanted to be the start-up screen, hit ENTER
5. You will be back to the screen described in (1)
6. Turn OFF unit by holding SRC
7. Turn ON unit by pressing SRC

I actually had to use FUNC and eject. Unfortunately, I went through all of the steps and it didn't startup with the new screen. The reason that I posted this is in hopes that someone else can get it to work. I know I've probably done something slightly wrong, but I don't know what.

No this is for the Kenwood double-din GPS head units -- I have a DNX-8120.

I doubt the stock GPS will do this...

Yes I saw these too.

It does not work, and I've tried 480x270 and the 480x243 (which is the res that Crutchfield reports for this screen -- although 270 seems better on the backgrounds).

Time to contact Kenwood -- I think this is a 8120 bug.

BTW warning, trying this does reset all of your setup settings, including audio settings. This sucked.

Yes appears to be same instructions. 5120 uses SRC instead of FNC because of the different button configuration, but 7100 should be same.

Cool Re: Kenwood head unit 08 wallpaper

Hi guys, I got this to work.
Followed the instructions as I listed above (having to basically reset the whole unit).

I agree with Scoopman - the resolution that seems to work the best so far is 480 x 270. It just seems to "fill" the screen better.

I held the SRC and Eject buttons while pressing the reset button and then got back to the main screen. I hooked up my USB key which had only 2 pictures on it at the time. These were the only files on the USB key. I pressed SETUP then and went into User Interface. Then as shown in the manual on page 77, I was able to to hit Memory under User Background - this opens up the pictures on the USB key.

You select the image you want to load onto the unit and hit enter. Now the image is loaded onto the 8120. Afterwards then you need to go back to the background change screen and hit "Change" under Background Change. Select the image that you just uploaded and then hit enter again. Now the background image should be changed for you.

You can try turning off the power and then turning the unit back on to see if the image "stuck"...

I'm attaching a few pics here - hope they work. The first is the image I have as my background (source jpeg). The second is what my background now looks like. The last two images are just eye candy - I managed to burn copies of Transformers and the Matrix onto one DVD...

They're part of this set at Flickr

So the only difference you did is the extra step of going back to the change screen a second time after you "entered" the image and hit "change" again?

Man I have to take pictures of every one of my options screens and audio setup before I have the stomach to reset my unit yet again.....
