Its not uncommon at all to hear brake noises at low speeds on STi's. My brakes make all kinds of noises... The real question is...do they still stop you well?

Not intending on highjacking, but seeing as I have a related problem I thought I'd ask...

I get the clack and squeal when I'm driving slowly too. Then I'll stop, go to back up, then brake again, and it does the same clack and squeal. The funny thing is, is that it only happens on my drivers side front brake. Is it possible that my brake pads are lose in the front left rotor? Suggestions?

Welcome to fixed caliper brakes . The pads float in the caliper and there is a small amount of play. The first time you brake in one direction (forward or back) after having braked in the other, you will probably hear a click/clack/snap/whatever. 'Tis normal for this style of brake.

Thanks guys. I figured that this was somewhat normal for the Brembo's. I was just concerned because it never did this on my 06 WRX with the 4 pots, which I believe are a fixed caliper brake as well. Also, when I bought the STI from the first owner and drove it over 1800 miles to my home, it never once made any brake noise. It wasnt until a couple weeks later that it just started happening. I do have Porterfiled RS-4 brake pads on, which would explain a bit of squeel. But why the clacking noise is localized on my front left brake caliper is beyond me. I guess I'll have to take them apart this weekend. Any suggestions as to what I should look for when I'm in there?

mine started squealing and grinding at 100 miles. i was woried at first, but it kinda went away, only does it now when they are really hot. i had the dealer check it out just to be safe and they told me half a dozen 08 sti owners have come in complaining about it. but they cant find anything wrong. i read around i little more, and accept it as normal now

Get them looked at again, with the wheels off.
There have been a few complaints of cracked pads - I had weird grinding noises at 50-100 miles on the car, I'm at 1000 now, and both fronts are definitely cracked and on order. If they aren't cracked, they might be wearing unevenly on the outer edges.

Just an FYI.

Odd. I don't have any type of weird noises from mine (at about 2500 miles). My '05 never made any odd sounds either. Just assloads of dust.
