Default Ten Speakers? How?

OK. Brand new to the board. So don't kill me for not posting in the I.C.E forum. I have had my 08 STI for about a week. Love the car. Hate the sound of the stereo. It cannot be made to sound good.

How does Subaru count ten speakers in the car? This is my guess...
Front doors have a coaxial speaker in the kick panel, and the tweeters in the upper door for a total of 6 in the front. Then there must be a coaxial in the read doors as well for a total of 4 more. Is that how they get to ten?

Therefore the simplest upgrade would be to put some very high sensitivity coaxial drivers in the front door to replace the factory units.
Before you tell me to anything else before replacing the speakers, I do not want to replace the head unit, nor do I want to add amps/subs etc.. All I want is for the mid-range to sound better.

So I have been trying to figure out what speakers to buy. Right now I am leaning toward the JL TR600-CXi coaxial speakers. Anybody know if this is a good choice? According to Crutchfield they drop right in.

You got an aftermarket deck?

Adding a superior deck compared to the factory one alone will make a big difference.

I vote deck first and then speakers.

They count speakers the same way every car manufactures do. They count Tweeter + Midrange + Woofer as 3 separate speakers. It is gay, but that's how the "brag" about their cars to make them sound better.

As far as fixing the sound. Any after market speaker will sound better. Just do your research and chose wisely. I am sort of an Infinity whore when it comes to speakers in my personal car, but it is all up to you. There are better options out there.

I had 2 sets of JL components (6.5 and 5.25) in my last car. The speakers could really take a beating, i will give them that. Sound quality is ok on their interiors but there is much better out there. Personally I'm a fan of Alpine's R series. Great fidelity and durability that won't empty your wallet

If you're not planning on doing it all at once i would go in this order

1) Head Unit
2) Speakers
3) Amplifier

keep in mind that your new speakers will not really be able to show their potential until you get an amplifier. head units will brag about 50watts to each channel blah blah blah but what they don't tell you is that is PEAK power and not RMS. RMS is what matters and that is where head units are weak. you'll be lucky to get 20w rms out of a head unit. most speakers will want twice that or more RMS.

good luck!

It's cool that the new 08 body styles can use 6.5" for the rear door as well. I still need to decide if I will just plop the sub in the back and take it out when I need to, or use that kenwood sub and shove it under the seat.

Assuming you replace the deck/power source. If he is planning on keeping the stock deck ( and not add an amp utilizing the stock deck) but to under power a good speaker is going to be just as bad as powering a junk speaker...

i thought the system in mine was decent, i can get it to sound pretty good when i do a custom preset on the equalizer (i have the nav obviously). Although it sucks to have to turn it up to 36+ for it to be decently loud.

Not really worried about car shaking volume. So 80 watts should be enough. You see what annoyed me is that Morning Edition on NPR sounded bad. Yes, the news sounded bad. Music played though the system actually is bearable.

I don't think that I need any more power. After all my home system is built around a 25 Watt integrated amp, and that is loud enough for the whole living room.

Actually think that I might be going with some 93 dB sensitive Infinity 6.5 coaxial speakers. With that sensitivity driving them with the stock head unit should be fine.
