Cool info. Maybe it's just me, but new oil before and changing oil after an autocross seems pretty extreme. I can see either new oil before or new oil after, but both?

I read a post on here where several individuals tore a guy up for buying a turbo timer for his newly purchased 08 STI, but apparently it's not a bad idea, according to Subaru.

Quote:
"2. After highway driving or high-load driving, Subaru rcommends allowing the engine to cool by idling for at least 30 seconds before shutting off."

You live on a highway? I don't see how it applies. Just don't boost all the way into your garage and the water cooling system Subaru designed will be able to sufficiently cool the turbo when you shut off the engine. Just parking your car will eat up most of the 30 seconds.

Do people usually do an oil/filter change before and after track days? I ask because that PDF with the turbo cooldown info says this too.

i was one of the new guys that was told the turbo timer was not needed. i still have my turbo timer but haven't had time to install it. i sorta just sit in the car and put stuff away while the car cools down right now.

imo, a turbo timer is a $100 investment that can prolong the life and maintain your turbo in good condition. but there will always be those against it. to each his own is what i say.

Nope, water cooled, oil lubricated. Here is what Subaru said about the 2002 WRX with regards to turbo cooling. Applies just the same to the STI:

"2002MY WRX TURBO COOL DOWN PROCEDURE
FHI's position regarding this is that it is not necessary to perform a "cool down/idling" procedure, as was recommended with past turbo models. Our current 2.0L turbo engine has a far greater cooling capacity and, coupled with technology advances, makes this practice no longer necessary. This explains why information about cool down is not included in the 2002MY Impreza Owner's Manual.

The heat contained in the turbo charger will begin to vaporize the coolant at the turbo charger after the engine is stopped. This hot vapor will then enter the coolant reservoir tank which is the highest point of the coolant system. At the same time the vapor exits the turbo charger, coolant supplied from the right bank cylinder head flows into the turbo. This action cools the turbo charger down. This process will continue until the vaporizing action in the turbo charger has stopped or cooled down."

You can even see the coolant reservoir they're referring to, it's above the turbo.

I don't see it as a problem unless you are pumping 15+psi straight into your garage, slamming on the brakes, then immediately shutting the car down.

It's just one of those corporate disclaimers that will work against you if you f'up something related to the turbo.

No I don't live on a highway, however on a road trip I have pulled off the highway into a gas station to fill up. Sorry, didn't mean to anger the Subaru tech's, but thanks for the info.

the point is:
- if you love your car you will do this
- Subaru pointed out, years over years, that it´s not necessary
- and now Subaru changed their mind and say it´s mandantory

Idiots...I mean SoA
