I have no muffler and it's not that loud. I welded up a temporary exhaust until I go stage 2. Theres a cat and a turbo and both quiet the exhaust significantly.

On the stock turbo you'll lose power.

I have dyno graphs to prove it

I would like to see those .

I'm running a small 2.25" pipe that replaced the big heavy muffler. Is the power loss significant?

I have the dyno graphs at home and I'll upload them, but long story short the straight pipe made about 10 less peak whp and 30 less whp throughout the top end... spooled the turbo about 2-300 rpm later too. Keep in mind it was tuned for the straight pipe, not just a bolt on job. When I switched to my other exhaust (Cobb full 3" with mufflers) and re tuned it, I made the 10 peak and 20 top end whp.

Interesting stuff. My tuner and I have a theory that the noise from the straight pipe was setting off the knock sensor and causing it to pull timing though... so that could be part of the power loss. Search 'straight pipe STi' on youtube and you can hear it...

Interesting.

After an evo school and an autocross event this weekend my car felt like it was running crappy, and it took an ECU reset for it to feel right again. I wonder if you're onto something here.

ps- search for homemade 08 sti exhaust to see mine.

Wouldn't one consider this setup with no muffler? Perrin and Cobb both have the big muffler at the rear of the car just like the stock setup.

This is AMR's setup. I won't what gains and sounds this setup will provide?

Well I could stick my hand completely in my invidia n1 race exhaust. Which means NO restriction. So how would just not having the last axle back part be non benificial? Just trying to comprehend it...Not saying you would gain, but why would you lose?

The only problem with that is the midpipe points the exhaust right into the back of the bumper. You need a turn down or something to direct that exhaust somewhere. Here's mine. YouTube - 08 STI Home made exhaust

Well just tried out the no axle back thing. Holly cow! I couldnt stop smiling!!!! I herd my baby puur again. Reminds me of my n1 days(sighs in remorse)... As for boost I gained another psi like I should. With stock axle back I would be down 1 psi from my target 18.5 cobb map. Now im back where I should be. Im running a helix catted downpipe and stock midpipe, sounds a little quiter than my n1. But alot more mini back fires. WOT sounds like I have an external waste gate. Sounds to sick for words. All get a video up probly by tomorow. As of right now, I just found a cheap substitute for a catback.
