I understand this comletely. I try To keep it at 65mph on I-5, but when I look down im going 70-75mph. My 04 STI I could get over 30mpg, but my 08 seams so tight and I have been getting such bad milage I need to do something about it. I figure a CA, inlet tube, EL headers and uppipe, catted turbo back and of course the ap I hope to get over 30mpg again.

My last two WRX variants have had pretty tight engines past the 12k mile mark despite not strictly following the recommended break in procedure. I just let the car warm up, then I drove it normally through the full rev range until I hit my warning light at 5500rpm. I didn't ever hit the rev limit until well past the 5000 mile mark. Guys in the UK used to comment on how tight the engines felt until 25K miles!

I did notice a slight mpg gain after I went to stage 2 on AP, 1-2 additional mpg in normal driving. My mileage continued to improve ever so slightly until it plateaued at around 25k miles for both cars. I could hit 27-28 mpg on extended highway stints and 21 city on the STI, 23 city on the 02 wrx.

My mileage in I mode is worse than in S# and I'm miserable driving in it to boot. I'm convinced the car does not like to be short shifted as indicated by the green upshift arrow when in I mode. In S# I usually shift around 4K; I'm at 3500 miles right now running the AP stage 2 (catted) and I've been seeing about .3 mpg increase in each successive tank. I do not baby it, I'll wind it out to 100 periodically on on ramps and I drive 75 on the freeway (although my freeway time is very limited). I'm currently at 21.3 averaged over the last 400 miles. At 1000 miles my average was 18.

The highway thing is phenomenal. At 60 I can get 29 mpg, 65 that drops to about 26 and 70 is around 24. It only seems logical that I should continue this analysis deep into the triple digits...
