Default Oil/Oil Change Question

I picked up my 08 silver STI last week and, not surprisingly, have been enjoying it immensely. I was surprised to learn, however, that Subaru has begun recommending (requiring?) a oil change interval of 3750 miles on all turbo cars, since my now traded Forester XT had a 7500 mile OCI.

Do most of you other new STI owners follow/plan to follow this 3750 mile oil change interval? Wouldn't that make using synthetic oil (which I've been using for years) too expensive? But not using synthetics would mean losing their advantage in heat protection, etc., etc.

Interested to learn what the rest of you are doing.

I did mine at 2.7k something with mobile one syn. plan on every 3k, its just one of those costs, like shell preium at every fill up, and hypo tires when they are needed.

I change mine every 3333 miles (so I can track with the odometer), I use only Subaru oil filters, and Pennzoil 5W-30 dinosaur oil .

I have used Amsoil 5-30 and changed the oil every 5K miles, ever since my neighbor told me that's what he did. He was a certified Winston Cup, NASCAR, and locomotive engineer.

Every oil change I have used an oil analysis kit, and I haven't noticed the need to change the oil more frequently than once every 5K miles under normal conditions. The only time I changed the oil earlier was after a track day.

Thanks for all comments so far. I'm leaning towards at least starting with a plan to change every 5K followed by a used oil analysis, using some synthetic after the first 5000 or so miles. If the uoa shows a problem I'll change more frequently. But that's just a plan, and I'm not very good at planning....

Are you planning on driving the car 'normally' or race tracking it? I changed the oil in my 2002 wrx every 5000 miles using mostly castrol gtx 5w-30 and I drove the hell out of it, never had any problems at all with the engine for 120,000 miles. Planning to follow a similar ritual with the new STI too (although I am thinking of changing the oil first time @ around 200 miles )

Normally, or at least normally for an STI, i.e., no track, just ticket-inducing speeding, etc. Like you, I'll also change oil before the first recommended change (which I think is 3000k, and then 3750 afterwards). I'll probably change first around 1000.

Just hit 3000 and had it changed - the dealer had a strong negative reaction when I mentioned going synthetic...
