If you are bones like me the STI seats suck.
They are actually dangerous at the track having to brace yourself of the door and center console isn't ideal at 9/10ths.
Solution
Good man, you did the smart thing and upgraded your seats! I agree about the whole bracing yourself thing. Even my big ass doesn't feel as secure in these seats as I did with my 05 STI, but I don't plan to track my car more than a couple times a year, so I'm definitely glad they made the seats more comfortable for DD use.

For DD they are fine, but if you do any sort of spirited driving they could be tons better. America always gets the watered down stuff but the bolstering on these are just way too low. Once the bases for aftermarket buckets start coming out i'll be switching over to some Sparco's.

Sorry Dome, but you have to addmit the vast majority of americans are fat asses, and Subaru knows it. Most STI owners are not going to track their brand new 35k ride into the ground every weekend. Put those two facts together you get the perfectly logical choice Subaru made, comfy, wide, less than agressivly bolsterd seats. I don't like it, but it makes sense.

My question is why people keep thinking it's a 40k car. Even with it fully loaded, you're not crossing the $40,000.00 mark.

Most people don't buy the car with all the options and the ones who do, spend probably 38k at the most, I would imagine. It's still 30something car (33k-38k), I see no 4X's...

Anyways, his logic is not flawed, you just took it wrong. You're thinking "You just spent 40k, it should be the best thing out there on the road like a 60k+ BMW/Mercedes/etc"

Whereas he's saying "You just spent 40k, why not spend another 1k, Mr. Moneybags, and get the seat you desire."

Sorry for the rant, I'm not trying to piss anyone off with my opinions, just curious is all.

The '08 seats are better than the seats in my '05, both in terms of look and comfort. It seems you sink down into the new seat better than the old seat and there is no bobble-head effect. I haven't had the opportunity to get on the track yet, but I'm sure they'll be just as lacking as my '05 seats. I always look forward to a bruised knee after each track day lol.

If Subaru had offered the Recaros here, I'd have bought them. I'm only 175lbs, 5' 9" and wear size 32 pants, so I'm average in size and would gladly trade a more snug seat over comfort. The only downside to not having Recaros offered here is that there are no aftermarket seats with airbags.

Personally, I'm hoping Subaru offers Recaros for MY09 so I can snag a pair from my dealership. I certainly don't want to pay $3K per seat PLUS shipping to get them from JapanParts.

Damn, forgot to check my post all day so I didn't get a chance to respond to all the abuse I took....

Yes, of course, I have sat in them. I'm one of those people who will sit in the car in the showroom for 30 minutes with the doors closed hoping to be left alone so I can just contemplate the details of the interior. I've driven it three times, too.

The old seats were not pastel blue. They were blue and they were great. (Although I always thought they wouldn't have been so great were my car not blue.) Thanks for likening the STi pink to my purse, though. That was a sensible comparison. For the few of you that appreciated the classic STi pink, you can thank that guy for the switch to red.

I don't think going to the gym is gonna make my ass 5 inches wider but thanks for the idea. Belt size does appear to correspond to the opinions, though.

Some of you more eloquently made valid points. The whole refined thing most of us think is misguided may well have played into the shape as much as the color and I hadn't thought of that.

The responses answered my question, though - many agree the bolsters are lacking and the bottoms are wide but few are as concerned about the quality. I can take away that a seat redesign will unlikely at the top of Subaru's 09 improvements.

^^^ I like that we have adults here on IWSTI who don't blow up when taking a mild bit of heat after asking a question.

I liked the blue/black interior from my 05, but I've come to really like the grown-up look and feel to the 08 STI. The steering is another issue, but that'll be handled down the road, at least for me.

OP, I suppose you are unfamiliar with re bolstering the seats in these cars I take it? It is far from solving the problem but it does allow you to "custom fit" the seat a little bit more to your body type.

thats exactly what i did. 1-remove the seat cover, 2-cut high density ¾"foam to the shape you need according to where you want to boost the side bolsters, 3-drop the cover back on and go drive.
you get the stock looks, you`re hold tight, and you still have airbags

I recently sat in an 08 STI and I can say that I didn't really feel all that different in them compared to the 06 seats. They felt flatter on the bottom but the side bolstering was about the same. THe leather and shades of grey are IMHO a downside as I do not like leather for seats (slippery) and I really dig the blue of the 06 seats.

To the OP, I am also a fan of the pink color used in the previous gen STIs and I'm not afraid to admit it . Its technically "japanese cherry blossom pink" or something of that nature. Extremely sissy sounding, but I'd take it over the new "red" which seems a cross of deep cherry and fire-engine red.

2002 WRX - best seats evar

2008 STI seats very comfortable.. let's face it, Subaru did not set up this car for track use from the factory.. I love it though (well I will, if I ever get my f'in car! )

Really? I immediately felt like I was sitting down into the seat rather than floating on top of it. And once the car was in motion, forget about it... waaaaaaay better than my stock seats. I know a large part of the bobblehead reduction is probably due to the revised suspension, but I never got the impression that the 08 seats behaved like trampolines.
