They dont help it, so put it that way. If the air cant even try to travel down the center of the core, it's definatly doing less. But 80 or so bent fins won't effect anything.

Spend $7 like I did and gutterscreen it yourself. It looks fantastic, and in two years, I have 0 bent fins.

These pics sure show the direction the air takes when entering the IC. You can clearly see only about 2/3 of the core is damaged leaving the bottom 1/3 clean. It sux Subaru didnt design the hood scoop better so there would be bent fins across the entire IC. Then we would know that the IC is working at 100% instead of 66%.

I bet if we saw wind tunnel footage it would prove the same.

I guess Subaru choose style over function.

or perhaps the hail chooses a different path than the air

Nature of the beast. As air enters it's pushed towards the back. Faster the air goes in then pressure will build and air flow moves fowards. Only true way for full time 100% flow through would be verticle mounting (FMIC) or a taller chimney (higher scoop).

Also the weight of the ice pieces make them shoot to the back, unless they were deflected otherwise. I belive air is alot more pronned to being directed more easily than a heavy ice chip. But I do agree that a certain percentage is not being hit on the IC as much as it could be.
