Default DSG for 2009 ?

There were rumors to the effect that Subaru might add a DSG version to the Impreza STI USDM lineup for 2009. Has anyone heard any recent news on this possibility?

Last I read was that Subaru didn't like the DSG style transmissions. They felt there was too much of a disconnect or something like that. Basically they didn't like them for the same reason most of you don't like them.

That said they said they were working on something. When it will be out is anyone's guess. If the 2009 had a DSG, I could not get to the dealer fast enough to put down a deposit.

I wish there was a DSG available for the STI, although I'd be hesitant to purchase a first-year DSG transmission. I'm all in for year two, however...

Personally I don't like the DSG trannies. I love the fact that our cars ONLY come in a 6 speed manual.
More of a connection to the car.

But that's my .02

Thanks for the info updates. It is my understanding that OEM supplier to Toyota, AISIN
was working on the Subaru DSG. As longfury stated, perhaps Subaru is not liking the results?

From my understanding of what I read, it works but they don't like the loss of involvement. Subaru I think wants it but STI(the devision of Subaru responsible for all STI models) doesn't like the loss of involvement. I think its going to take Subaru management telling STI to use one. They are not going to offer it on their own from what I understand from ym reading on the matter.

The Evo X MR guys are still waiting cause Mitsubish is borderline incompetiant. It too them a very long time to adjust the tranny programming for the US market and driving habits. Also the transmission they used would not even be adiquate for a stock STI. Subaru has a thing about putting overkill clutches in their cars and the 350 ft/lb limit on the MR tranny would not cut the mustard for Subaru.

As long as it doesn't replace the 6speed. If they make it just a DSG it will hurt them alot!!

I doubt they would do that. Might see something crazy like a 7 speed DSG though. VW/Audi have one coming out in the next year or so.

In the current M5, BMW initially only offered a SMG tranny. Public backlash in the US forced BMWNA to come out with the regular 6 speed a few months later.

I wouldn't buy one but if SOA can sell more STIs while maintaining the quality they are known for, recent problems notwithstanding, I'm all for it.

The Audi 3.2 Quattro has DSG. For that car it is a nice compromise between performance and luxury. I don't think it would be as appropriate for a turbo 4 cylinder. The Audi 2.0T guys don't appear to like it as much. Great car is you are married though and your wife doesn't shift. My wife has pretty much taken over the Audi.

DSG is great for around town and freeway traffic. For the track or canyon carving the stick is more fun. I would pass on a DSG STI.

As others have mentioned, forget doing any engine mods. Definitely want the warranty with that tranny.

My wife likes a fast and nimble car, but she doesn't want a manual tranny because she's usually wearing all manner of wild heels and sandals and doesn't want to have to limit her shoe choice. She currently has a GTI with the DSG that's about due to be traded in. If the STI came with a DSG she'd buy one for sure.

I much prefer a manual, but if they did one that held the gear on redline, didn't lock out left foot braking, and was faster around a RallyCross course I'd have to buy one too, if reluctantly.
