Just finished. Took about 20 mins like everyone else. Li'l more of a growl around 3k, especially if your cruising in 4th or 5th and nail the throttle. I kinda like it. It's nothing compared to the sound of a TBE or CBE though. While everything was out I also unplugged the DRL's.

For all you guys that are interested in shaving pounds, I weighed the silencer and it comes in at 15.4oz's. Almost a pound

It was out in 20min. (average) same as other replys...a little more growl at 3500-4000.Can't really feel any performance boost.

But with the stage 1...it still goes like a raped ape!!!!!

Before I do this...should/or can there be any negative effects of completely removing the silencer?

I just covered the silencer hole for mine...

I'm really pleased with the results, sound-wise!! It has much more audible turbo spooling now, both with the windows up or down. Recommend this mod to anyone who loves the turbo spool high pitch whir as much as I do

What all did you do for that, aside from the hose clamp?

For the removal, I didn't take off the bumper.. Let's see if I can recount the steps..

1. Removed the intake duct up front with the two screw-pushbutton fasteners
2. Detached the sensor wire (I'm guessing intake temp?)
3. Detached the two metal clamps that hold the box together
4. Loosened the big rubber hose that comes out of the airbox
5. Removed air filter
6. Removed back half of the airbox
7. Removed front half of the airbox, which is attached by 3 bolts, two on the frame to the side and one underneath
8. Simply put that rubber cap over the silencer's hole and reattached everything. (detached DRL while I had the box/silencer out)

The rubber piece was $4.49 at Ace hardware.. it had the clamp already on it and had a note about something like "Only for use on sewer pipes"

Pretty much.. if you want, I can look at the label if it's still around and get the actual name. I found it at Ace right next to the PVC stuff. It was 2" in diameter and took quite a bit of squeezing by the hose clamp for it to be snug on the small part of the silencer jug

Ok someone else asked about the exact part so I found the label.. It's Ace part # 4094701

Ace - Ace Tree: Plumbing: Plumbing Hardware: Drain / Sewer Fittings & Parts: Flexible Couplings & Connectors: Ace End Cap

2" one, $4.49

I dont get it. So you hear the turbo spooling more with this "Only for sewer use" Part?!?!?! weirddd

This is what the guy said that has the pictures of removing it about filling the hole up. "The hole is before the filter, so the air is still being filtered. I thought about sealing it, but judging from looking under the car, it seems air from the front makes its' way to that area, so I'd rather be able to get the cooler, more oxygen dense air than seal the hole."

... So whats the truth behind this, what do you want, to close up the hole or leave it open?

I would honestly just go and buy an intake for the car when its released.

With the ACE Hardware pipe cap, you leave the entire silencer attached, its just blocked off. If you were to remove it, there's no clean way of sealing that hole that I can see, I guess taping it might work, or leaving it open to get air from the bottom of the bumper as well as from the grill.

Honestly, I don't think its worth the effort, as the sound increase is so small, its hardly noticable. I didn't listen to anyone else saying that previously in this thread, but after having done it myself, it's whatever I guess... Haha

I tried it, too..

I used a plastic PVC plug to close off the hole leading to the silencer (I didn't have to remove the air-box). I didn't hear much of an increase in turbo or engine sounds. The growl may be a little louder. Whatever the differences are, however, they're too subtle. I removed the plug. IMO, it's not really worth it.

Maybe if we could safely run a K&N or the like, together with removing/plugging the silencer would result in a substantial increase in sound.
