Guys, I could be wrong b/c I have not started mine yet(maybe tonight). Anyway, I believe there will be performance gains by removing and or modifying this. I did this at the race track in my 1990 Mustang Gt as did a friend of mine when received the tip from someone at the track. We both dropped exactly 3 tents from our times the very nxt run. I believe the result would be even more dramatic in a turbo... Again, I may be offbase here but I am assuming this feeds the airbox? Wouldn't it be beneficial to run a ram air so to speak to this via fabricating a stealth like inlet in the lower front balck louvered cladding? Again, I have not even look into this at all other than reading this post but if I am adding things up correctly then I may pursue this. Please share your thoughts. Thanks.

Yeah, you're way off base. Go look at your intake system closely, then come back and post.

I'm not saying block the airbox inlet.

There's a little round hole in the airbox that leads to the silencer, blocking it should prevent the air (sound waves, rather) from entering the silencer.

JPH did his, reported minimal sound change, so i'm not bothering with mine. Think the sound 'improvement' is much less than earlier models due the the different design & airflow path

Thanks for the diagram--very sweet(where did you get it)? Anyway, it doesn't look like I was off base at all.

Be sure to post up your time slips / dyno plots of your silencer removal gains.

FWIW, I had an 08 WRX before I got the STi. I found that the WRX has the same airbox as the STi, but without the sliencer. There was a round lip where the silencer would go, but it was not cut out. I could hear the BOV a lot more on the WRX than on the STi. I just figured it was because the turbo spools up much earlier on the WRX and the BOV was not being drowned out by engine noise due to high rpm's. If you guys really wanted to do away with the silencer and have the hole plugged, then an 08 WRX airbox would be the OEM solution.

The 08 STI intake is more similar to the Legacy intake design like someone already mentioned, rather than the 06-07 STI's.

Check out this other thread:
08 STi intake silencer delete? How?

Pretty simple, took like 20 mins, didn't have to remove the bumper or anything like that. I don't notice any performance gains or loss. As far as sound goes, you can hear the bov and the turbo spooling a bit more.

I did remove my silencer and you definetly get a little bit more sound.
More Performance... i dont know

It's possible maybe, because the air can go directly and smooth to the filter element and don't have to swirl in to the silencer

I took the silencer off the other day when installing my Kartboy crank pulley. Drove the car afterwards and noticed very little difference in sound. Not expecting anything in terms of performance. I put it back in shortly after.
