Default What did you Pay?

I am beginning to negotiate for an 08 and want to find out what kind of deals everyone got. It would be helpful if you were to list your options recieved for reference. Thanks.

What matters more than what others paid is how well you can negotiate amongst the dealers from which you are willing to buy the car. I know personally that you can get anywhere from $1500 below invoice to 1500 above invoice. Most people have bought around invoice plus or minus $500. That's all you really need to know.

Also, this has been discussed on this forum already. Try out the search and you should be able to get at least one thread on this.

It also depends what particular color and package you want and what inventory is out there at that time in your area. I actually ended up only saving a few hundred off MSRP. I wanted a DGM/nav and, for the period of 8 weeks that I was searching, there was was only one anywhere within 500 miles of me. It had a $3000 markup. Then another showed up (pre-order, buyer backed out), so I pounced and took the best price I could get.

There were a whole bunch in all colors without the nav, and several WRB/nav, and prices for those were far more flexible.

I'm also starting to do some price shopping right now. So far, I haven't had any troubles negotiating down to invoice pricing. With the 'Stop Sale,' I've been trying to negotiate about $500-1,000 under invoice. I'm actually taking my current car in tomorrow to have it appraised by the dealership. I'm expecting to get low-balled for my trade-in, but we'll see what happens.

WIth todays market, economy, gas prices I wouldn't pay anything more than $1,000 under invoice.

Use today's market to your advantage.

Less and less people are buying expensive cars these days, especially an $40k Subaru.

Yeah around invoice... and definitely under MSRP.

Don't let them give you BS that the color you want is hard to find for that price or something like that....
...just make sure you know who the competition is and say that you would like to shop around.

Most salesman won't let a serious buyer walk out without major dealing... make sure you look like a serious buyer....

i paid right around 36K for mine with BBS and roof rails. you're paying a LOT of money and should get EXACTLY what you want. don't settle AND get right around invoice (either a bit higher or lower) but in this market, and the troubles SOA is having with the stop sale, the dealer should be willing to deal. if they don't have your car, find a dealer that does and arrange trade..that's what I ended up doing.

I have to pay msrp since all the dealers here have this no-negotiation policy. I ask about how you guys are getting less than invoice, and the dealer tells me that it's impossible without losing money on every sale.

Walk in, say "I will give you invoice right now." When they say no, walk out, simple as that. Just watch how fast the no-negotiation policy goes out the window. Even better, if you can skip the floor salesmen and talk with the fleet or Internet sales guy, you can probably get invoice or close to it without having to get in a pissing match. Worst case, if you find they really and truly won't budge from MSRP, then you should expand your search radius as necessary. How far are you willing to drive to save a couple thousand bucks? 200 miles? 300? 500? You can also have one shipped, and if you're saving a couple thousand bucks on the price it'll still be a lot cheaper overall.

Well, he's straight up lying to you. How could there be multitudes of people on here who paid near invoice if that were true? I'm not saying you necessarily can do better with THAT dealer - if he's telling you that he probably doesn't NEED to sell it for less - but he is lying that he'd LOSE money if he did. He just wouldn't be making as much and that's his right to hold firm but I just wish they'd own up and say, "Nah, no thanks. I think I can sell it for more." when you make an offer as a private seller would.

If you are stuck with a dealer that won't go lower, do the CostCo thing. That's automatic invoice plus about $500. Anyone can do that anywhere. (by signing up for CostCo, at least.)
