Can the steering wheel audio controls work with an aftermarket head unit

If I were to purchase an aftermarket head unit, like a double DIN Alpine unit, will the steering wheel controls work with it?

I think you will need an adapter.

Yes, the PAC SWI adapter has worked well for a couple of us. There's more info in a thread I started about the OEM single-DIN dash panel.

Be sure to note that there are different PAC SWI modules for different brand head units. The SWI-JACK works with JVC, Alpine, Clarion, and Kenwood, etc.

PAC is not bad, I use the PAC-ALP one (its a little older). There is a slight delay with the PAC interface, but its definitely usable.
