Default Considering going to the dark side.

Well, I really would like an 08 sti -- but with all of the problems in paint and engine (and potentially tranny), and the fact that I can't even buy one now...I am now considering the evo X. I mean...I could get one with a super nice sound system for like 31,200, and thats what is advertised on craigs list - already well below invoice!

The evo's make crazy power with minimal mods, and they out handle the sti on track, as well as provide better feedback. The look actually isn't that bad, I was pleasantly surprised when I saw one on the road the other day. Sure, the STI's interior is nice but, the evo is also refined and it has better seats.

Basically the evo is going to be a better performer. What should I do? I was about to buy an STI this weekend, but then last minute the guy tells me that it is making a knocking noise and it sounds like it has an exhaust leak! I just have lost all faith in the 08 sti's now -- they are riddled with problems, and I am frustrated. I sold my kick ass modded WRX and now I turn to buy and...its all just ****.

What do I do? Whats something you guys can say to convince me back? Help. Its starting to really grab me, to the point where I am going down to the mitsu dealership tomorrow to have a looksie.

Sounds like you've already made your decision. I don't know why you are so certain that the evo is "going to be" a better performer, but if you are sold then congrats on your new Evo. Please post some pics once you buy.

Evo's have just as many problems, bro. This isn't Walgreen's.

If you did your research you would see the Evo has it own set of problems and honestly posting like that seems like you are just trying to start something. Anyways the evo is a really nice car that does respond well to mods and handles quite well on the track. I like them but in the end I went with the STI for my needs. Just go on the evo boards and do some poking around and you will see a list of issues the new evo is having so at least then you can make informed assessment.

I never got to the point that was getting quotes from dealers for the new evo but if you see it "well below invoice" go for it. The threads that i read about the evo pricing were stating it was somewhat difficult to find them under MSRP.

The reality is, both have their share of problems. The EVO has a balky 2nd. gear syncro, and paint problems similar to the STi. The EVO also has the same stock tune drivability problems the STi has. Not to mention, Mitsubishi service isn't exactly held in the highest regard.

Of course, with the Subaru stop sale currently going on, the fact that you can actually buy an EVO, most would say, is a rather big plus.

Ultimately, the STi is the more well rounded car, and that's why I chose it over the EVO.

They're both nice rides.

I have said it before, EVERY production car has problems, EVERYONE. The mark of a great company is how they DEAL with the problems when they arise. So far it looks like Subaru has been ultra-proactive in dealing with the 08 issues and that is a comfort.

Ultimatley you need to buy the car you want and will be happy with. If your worried about it get an extended warranty on whatever car you chose.

Take care and good luck.

Geez...and my biggest complaint about my 08 so far is that the f**king compass mirror POS is in the middle of my windshield...

Whats up there pwn...

I loved the look of the 08 Sti but couldn't get over the seats/nav system/price/body roll/no keyless in America/ Recaros (Why? WTF?) what I heard about the understeer/little effect the user adjustable +/- torque had on traction.

I currently own a Evo X for about a month and a half now and here are some real unbiased views that i have for the car so far...

+ Amazing handling on wet or dry pavement..
+ Little bit of throttle enduced oversteer when throttle is pushed on hard corners.. (So far my experence is limited to this with the traction control on.. not brave enough to push it that hard with traction off)
+ Seats support
+ Steering feel (feels pretty organic in its nature.. the faster the car is pushed the better the steering feels)
+ Despite its weight if feels lighter on its feet in the twisties (3600lb)
+ Positive shifting/feel when warm
+ Get a lot of looks from people (Mostly guys... most girls have no idea what it is LOL)
+ Keylessness (comes in handy more than you think)
+ Power on freeway

- Trunk space
- Notchy shifting when cold (for the first 5 mins of driving 1-2-3 shifting is notchy if done too fast.. goes away once warm and actually shifts better when the RPM's are high- Should be a TSB for it soon.. rumor is its the factory fluid sucks)
- Cheaper interior
- No bluetooth support on GSR models (however there is a How-To for it now)
- Smell clutch on some hilly takeoffs or 3-point turns
- Sometimes there is a pulsating idle.. computer map? (I think there will be a TSB for it soon)
- 19 MPG real world MPG (70% city 30% highway)
- HID's are part of a pkg..
- No sexy exhaust note like the STi

+/- Runs EXTREMELY rich (Could be good for Mods to lean it out [explans mod potential]and bad for MPG)

No pedals breaking LOL
Very light surface rust on muffler

Now these are some of the things I noticed.. I have never driven a STi so I can't compare the two but this is what drew me to the Evo. No FLAMING me and keep it on the OP topic!

Thanks! -Syr00

It's a first year production run. Getting a car from another company that is a first year production run isn't going to make you happy if you dislike working out the kinks, especially with the reputation Mitsubishi has for glass trannys. Sounds like you should wait a year or be happy with an 07 STI/Evo.

I've had no problems with paint, engine or tranny. In fact, this is one of the most solid clutches I've ever driven, the engine is smooth and with the clear bra the hood still looks brand new after 2 thousand miles. My wifes BMW has rock chips all over it. No paint is immune to rocks hitting the car at 70 MPH. The utility factor of the hatch is awsome, the seats are extremely comfortable and why are you worried about the radio in a rally/race car? It does not matter how much you spend on a stereo, the acoustic environment of these cars (STi and EVO) were not designed for music. If music and paint are your primary concerns you should be considering a Lexus, infinity or any other car with backward priorities. By the way, why is EVO the dark side? STi's and EVO's are both great cars purchased by people with similar desires.
