Unhappy Buying 08 STI, but..

I'm very concern after reading the paint chip problem, then engine knocking and now transmissions poping out from gear problem. Looks like I'm going to get the 135i instead, like to know if anyone here in the same boat.

I am in the same boat. I have never owned a Subaru and I am very close to pulling the trigger on an 08 STI.
I have considered the 135i (great car) but around here you can't spit without hitting a BMW.
That, and I really want AWD and I love the styling and functionality of the STI.

I am not that worried about the problems with the STI. Face it EVERY production car has its share of problems, the real issue is how to the manufactures deal with it. So far it looks like Subaru has come out with both guns firing and that speaks volumes as to the type of company they are.

That being said, I am going to wait till the end of summer/fall to see how things pan out. I may even wait for the 09 to see how they look, but I am about 99% sure I am STI bound.

Take care and good luck

I don't think you can buy a more reliable car than a Subaru, nor a better performance bang for your buck. That being said, I would certainly encourage a drive in both vehicles to make sure you prefer the STI. I love every single thing about the STI. The way it looks (inside and out), the practicality, and most every thing about the performance and drive...

However, the one kicker, for me, is the turbo lag until 3000rpm.

Given the 135 has 300ft-lbs from 1400rpm (!!) I'm wondering if that might be more fun around town, feeling like a 300+ hp car. Just the same, given every single other advantages the STI has (over the 135i) -- price, aftermarket support, greater power potential (per dollar), aesthetics, AND functionality (hatch + usable back seats, with their own doors) -- the 135i would seriously have to wow me to trade up (over).

The only other thing I can point out, which ever car you get, budget for a clear "bra" paint protector ESPECIALLY if you live some where with sand/rocks for snow. Having living in a temperate climate for 30 years, just moved to snow country, I didn't realize how crucial this is to protecting ones paint, even more so with the STI flared fender. Both my rear-doors are pock marked with 1000 tiny chips.... here's hoping subaru does the right thing and repairs this!

No tranny or engine problems, but some chiping. I have 4,500 miles and all highwy miles so I would expect some chips. BMW has it own issues too. I wonder what the 135 will have issues with being a first model year,

I understand looking at it dollar for dollar. Other than that, they are not even from the same planet? You are looking at an entry level BMW and the best of what Subaru has to offer (in a sense). If you look at BMW's M line, you will find some issues as well. The STi is more for the Die-Hard crowd who embraces the heritage of the model.
If it is only the $$ that are making your decisions---maint. costs on Subaru and maint costs on the BMW. Don't forget to check the insurance as well.

I agree this is a stupid thread. Every car has its share of problems. And if you think the Beemers is going to be any different.....oh boy....1day hit it on the head with the M line - many many many problems (the transmissions on the E36 I think (one before the 46) had major issues and were replaced constantly by BMW (had a friend who was a technician for BMW who did this routinely).

Dollar for dollar the Subby and probably the Evo are the best overall total performance packages (utility, performance, styling, reliability, etc.) you can find on the market. Yes the 1 series is a very nice car but is no where near as practical and when priced with options dips into the mid-40s.

The thing I don't like about the BMW's around here is it seems like every little rich kid is driving one thinking they got a car that kicks everybody's asses! Makes me laugh!

What I love about the STI are most people don't know what it is. It turns heads, looks awesome, the performance is incredible, hangs with the yuppie cars, and at least around here is extremely rare.

I have to say it again. The 135 is hideous IMO. If you are going to get a Bimmer do it right and get an M3/5 and if you can't afford one of those get a 335i/xi ... but please for the love of god do not get a 135!!!

I've been noticing that some people in the '08-specific forum are starting to become a little rude in their comments to others. This site was founded as a place for owners and potential owners to come to for mature discussions regarding the STI. While we've had a rash of trolling recently, I really doubt the OP of this thread is a troll. He has perfectly valid concerns and has been a member since 2005; according to some of his earlier posts, he might already have an '08 on order.

It is OK to disagree with an opinion and even respond passionately about a topic, but anymore NASIOC-like responses will be dealt with appropriately and infractions will be issued. Consider this as fair warning. We are supposed to be a helpful site - keep that in mind.

It's difficult to follow a rule that is so vague. I've posted a few times on NASIOC and have had nothing but positive feedback.

Are you saying that it is OK to bash peoples opinion, but it is not ok to bash them personally?

I've never had the transmission issue. Most American(USA) buyers are not affected by the stop engine sale.
I have the paint chip issue even with mudflaps. Subaru will be handling that shortly, already spoke with my dealership.

I think most people understand what "NASIOC-like responses" mean; those short, pointless responses that add nothing to the thread or even really qualify as a response other than to be mean.

Essentially, post like how you would if you were talking to that person face to face. Telling them to "gtfo go buy your bimmer" is not an appropriate response. So yes, personal attacks will not be tolerated.

Also, where did you read "bash peoples posts"? Did I write "bash"? No. I would hope that most people here are mature and intelligent enough to know how to disagree with someone's opinion without insults or childish posts.

Sadly, I don't know many people who can respond passionately AND in a respectful manner (i.e. without resorting to personal attacks). I know it's possible, but seen far too infrequently...
