Default Does the Accessport have to stay in car after flash?

If it doesn't, why don't people just share them and split the cost? Thoughts?

The AP gets "married" to your particular vehicle. It also downloads the stock ECU map, so it cannot be transferred from one vehicle to another without "unmarrying" it.

Besides, the Cobb folks need to make a living too!

Okay, but his first question wasn't necessarily answered... Do you have to have the AP itself around in the car, or just good to keep around or what?

No, It doesn't need to be kept in the car once you've flashed it.

Looked right past it...

Nope, it doesn't need to stay in the car. Once it is flashed, it will only need to be in the car if you want to reflash, reset ecu, view realtime data, etc.

The Access Port does not need to be left connected to the vehicle. Once the ECU flash is done, the AP can be stored safely away.

If you're looking for a more cost effective solution (albeit far less proven/supported than Cobb), there are open source tuning solutions such as RomRaider. Granted that project doesn't yet support CANbus vehicles (ie any 08 Subaru models), but it's only a matter of time.

Where *exactly* is it that we connect the AccessPort to the car? Can anyone take a picture of what the connection area looks like, with our without (preferably with) AccessPort connected? Thank you!

I do not have a camera here, but if you look below the steering wheel, there is a rectangular hole in the panel. The fat plug for the AP gets plugged in there and the USB end of the cable goes to the AP.

if you have a real-time map, then yes you *must* keep your accessport in the car just in case the battery dies and wipes the map, if not then it doesn't really matter

Interested. It makes no sense to leave it in there then. Thanks.

Thanks for the PDF... now, it seems that it'll be very easy to find where the USB plugs in, but that PDF talked about connecting two wires to put the car in like "test mode" or something. Did you / do you need to do that?

Yes, to flash the map you will need to connect the green test connectors. There are two pairs, one on the passenger side that should be connected by the dealer at inspection and another under the dash on the driver's side that will be d/c'd. They are bright green, only connectors with that color under there, but you'll need to get down alongside the car with a flashlight to find them.

And after car is flashed, you have to disconnect the green test connectors, yeah? That's what the cobb PDF said.

Is this just for datalogging certain variables or what? I didn't connect anything before I flashed mine, have had no problems.
