Have 07 owners been complaining about this too? AFAIK this is the same gearbox as the 07, but the synchros have supposedly been altered.

I find it very strange that all of a sudden the 6spd they've basically been using for the last 5 years in the STI is suddenly starting to have problems when it has been near bullet proof.

I wonder if people just aren't fully disengaging the clutch when they downshift and therefore it's not fully engaged when they let out the clutch. That I could see, but that is driver-error.

Edit:

Now I should clarify that there obviously could be a defect for some people but it certainly doesn't affect all transmissions.

ya, sound gets a lil bit louder, but i noticed the colder it is the louder it is, if i turn the car on and its like 70 out, it dosnt do it.

crappy problem to, not like i could just drive it there and show them, by the time i get there it will be hot and wont make the noise anymore. maybe its just the because the colder the thicker the trans oil, and thats just the sound of it gettin crushed threw the gears... i donno, throwin around ideas

Darn it, it happened to me three times today (it popped out of second). I really do not think it was a driver error, I drove it hard for like an hour and everything was fine, it was coming back from the twisties when the "popping" started (and driving really soft this time). I turned it off, let it cool for a while, then drove for another hour, it did not happen again.
WTF...

How does it pop out of gear? Do you really just go into neutral without knowing it? I haven't had this problem at all and I have thrashed quite a lot at this point (2100 miles on it).

The STI is still made in Japan, right?

Just wondering.....

Unless the '08 has attracted a number of drivers much less capable than the average yahoo driving an 04-07, I think it's likely something is going on. AFAIK popping out of gear is usually caused by one of two things -- badly worn gears, or misadjusted linkage. The latter seems far more likely in this case.

100% Parts and Build in Japan. It is one of the reasons I bought it.

I do not like buying German cars made in South Africa (C class Sport), Mexico (VWs) or the US (M class) either.

I believe US cars should be built by Americans and British cars should be built by British, not Germans or Indians...

Agreed. Samuri swords must be strictly fabricated by Japanese master sword smiths

If it's just an econobox for joe six pack's grocery getter than it foesn't matter much to them where it's built.

I had an 07 and have 400miles on my 08 now. Ive had it in S# for only a little bit and still have yet to really break 4kRPM but it has not once poped out of gear.

I do notice that in first and second gear when you are first launching the shifter jiggle back and forth(front to back) If you look at some vids of the Japanese revieweing this car pay attention to the CLUTCH DUMP launches the shifter goes CRAZYYYYYYY.

On another note... I know im not used to this car yet... and I do like the smoothness of the pedals but it is alot harder for me to drive this car smoothely. Ill figure it out though.

To me it seems as if all the problems started with the 07 in the respect of the engine tune issues and it seems to have been getting worse as the production continues with the 08's.

I agree with the post above in the fact that you shouldnt rely on a aftermaket part to resolve a manufacture defect on the product. Take it to the dealership and have them repair the issue so this way you will be less likely to run into any other issues with the tranyn further down the road.
I agree with you. I had to buy a AP for my 07 STI. I think the 08 STI is a bad choice right now. Subaru needs time to fix these issues. With the switch to the hatchback and power train problems not too many STI's will be getting sold.

Took me a while to figure out how to drive my STi smoothly in heavy traffic. In traffic on my S2000 I could leave it in 2nd. The STi, needs to be left in 1st (in N mode) and rev'd higher. If you put it in S# in traffic, you are asking for trouble. When you need to brake in heavy traffic, do not do an engine brake. Push the clutch in and use the brakes, otherwise it will be too jerky.
