Drop the braking distance to the 106 that Edmunds tested, and boom, all of a sudden it's 103.30. I know, not fair to mix R&T and Edmunds numnbers, I'm just messing with it for fun.

This is still kind of a neat formula, as long as one understands how to interpret the results.
I agree. I think it's a neat formula.

You can also change the formula to give a lower weighting to Price if you think it shouldn't be such a big factor.

Similarly, you can change the weighting of fuel economy, etc. to reflect your personal automotive values.

Does it answer the question of whether an MS3 is 90% of an STi? Seems to me the answer is "at least 90% if you factor in the costs".

Well, that would also say that the STI is 90% of an M3... which it ISN'T...

But maybe it is! (At least according to this analysis.)

Hell, with the same testing method, the SRT-4 would be the winner with the ULTRA low price tag...

Here's an excerpt from the Road & Track web page where they explain the formula.

As you can see, E2F2 rewards Goodness in the automotive aspects we hold dear, acceleration, braking and handling, together with equally relevant matters of price and fuel economy. Note, it omits intangibles such as prestige, feel-good or what Henry N. Manney III used to call "crumpet-collecting." Rather, it takes data straight from our Road Test Summary and weights them to have, more or less, equal influence.

You could always modify the formula by adding an element for "prestige" or "feel good". I'm sure those are elements that are important to a lot of us. I just don't know how to quantify it for the group at large.

By the way, I've been dusted on the track by a modified SRT-4. It was well-driven and beautifully maintained. Actually it was quite a car.

Do they take into account overall quality, inside and out?

i have to admit, although, IMO, the STi is in a totally different class than the Mazdaspeed 3, i do think the MS3 is one hell of a deal.

No, I believe that was excluded as part of "prestige, feel good and/or crumpet collecting" in their explanation.

I suspect assessing quality inside and out would be too extensive of an undertaking and too subjective for the magazine.

Subjective? Not entirely...

SRT-4 vs. ANYTHING else... clear winner.

Well if i were you guys i would be looking at the new COBALT SS turbo couse from i have read here that will be the best one. Dont forget that subaru lasts for a very long time and not like the SRT4 which road and track said that is the best value forthe money they were and still are horrible. I dont know if you guys have noticed but R&T has their favorite cars Did you read the artical about the M3-GTR-PORCHE and match it with the previous ones LEXUS ISF- MERCEDES C63 AMG and you have the M3 the best car in world
R&T blows. Me myself love the STI and that is all i need to know.
