because it's a DOT requirement for DRLs. it may be something that they also mandate making it hard to disable.

Fogs are tied into the low beam headlights because they cannot be on with high beams in some states. If they were tapped into the parking light circuit they would be on all the times, including with high beams.

I did this rewire on my RX-8 and the fogs still turned off when i hit my high beams.

Totally understand they did it due to regs. But it renders the fogs useless. The Xenon's drown them out and when it actually is foggy out you want the low beams off and the fogs on.

Agreed, but like you said, your rewired your RX8 to get it to behave the way you wanted it. I don't think any car comes stock with the setup you want. On my 02 WRX the rewire into the parking lights allowed the fogs to be on with any combination of lights, including high beams.

not to BUT I too got the PIAAs and while I can actually tell now when I turn on the fogs, I think in the fog, the headlights are really going to kill any visibility. I know Cali. law forbids the fogs on without headlights but this law seems absolutely crazy to me. I would love a way to be able to tap into the fogs relay and to plug in a lead from the parking lights where the headlight lead goes.

What is the big deal with not liking the DRLs? Are they really that annoying?

i don't like them on cars because i ride motorcycles. they've been using always-on headlights since the 70's and it helps self-absorbed drivers notice us better. then, along comes some DOT chucklehead who thought that it would be a good idea to make everyone have then and, while we're at it give them a nice name like DRL!

Now motorcycles are lost in a sea of DRL and, once again, dunderheaded drivers can get off scott free after killing a rider by simply claiming to be the village idiot. using the secret phrase, "I didn't see him/her." when it was really a because they were:

1. Using their cell phone
2. Futzing with the kids in the back seat
3. Using their cell phone
4. Goofing with the radio
5. Using their cell phone
6. DWI/DUI
7. Using their cell phone
8. Too stupid to live (but killed someone else instead)

The bottom line is that they forget that DRIVING is job #1.

True BUT these same poor excuse for drivers would plow into cyclists/riders regardless of DRLs. I don't think DRLs necessarily desensitize drivers to riders. Having said that, I don't see much point in them for city driving.

I agree. DRLs make any car more visible ... if you are looking. If you're oblivious, no DRL in the world will be enough to make you notice another car/bike/whatever.

So they're DOT requirements in the US now, because last I "heard" (which was a looong time ago) they weren't. We've had them up here since the early '90s.

I remember a few forums I visited, people were complaining that DRLs are "distracting" or something, but then these are the same people who turn around and want Xenon HIDs

Bikes mandatory headlights help them stand out against a sea of steel. When cars went to DLR the bikes got lost in the sea of lights. Due to their narrow frontal area it's common for other motorists to misjudge their distance and/or speed (or just plain not see them).

According to The Hurt Report most multi-vehicle wrecks involving bikes are the fault of the driver of the car. The most common type of accedent is a car turning left in front of a bike. The most common reason for single-vehicle accidents on bikes is speed (for conditions). One contributing factor is a lack of formal training.
