To the poster that asked...increased caster gives you the "driving on rails" feel. It improves straight line stability and and gives a self centering feel to the steering. I could be wrong but I beilieve it allows for improved camber gain in cornering.

Factory Alignment? ![]() That's what makes me think it has to be something more than just caster affecting the steering feel. Last edited by Digitalfiend; 04-09-2008 at 09:04 PM.

Don't go more than 1.5 psi lower than factory recommended settings though. ( FYI:factory setting F:33psi R:32psi (~15 Celsius)) Try this, and you will be surprised by what you feel. Seriously, the changes that made the most difference in steering feel for me is the front tire pressure settings. Trust me, Before you shell out thousands of dollars for expensive suspension mods, play with your tire pressures first(especially front end for steering feel and response in this case), 1~1.5psi could make a very appreciable difference in steering feel. It is a very simple fact that: Lower pressure=larger contact patch=faster initial response for steering input=better ride Unfortunately, lower pressure also = more tire distortion under load(will cause understeer at limit )= higher rolling resistance=use a little more fuel=burn your tires quicker Knowing the Pros & Cons of different tire pressure settings,You can start to experiment with different numbers to find the best balance of steering response and cornering performance for you needs. For DD or sprint driving : I would use factory setting or slightly lower(like 0.5~1psi lower) to get the best initial steering response at low speed and a comfort ride. Maybe i got a low reading tire pressure gauge, I found 0.5 psi lower than factory setting to be the best setting in term of steering response at low speed. The car feels very responsive and compliant,I feel very confident when i take my car to some unfamiliar and broken backroad. (My alignment setting: Toes:0 all around | Cambers: F: -1'.0" R:-1'20'' | Caster: 6'30" ) For AutoX and technical road track: I would probably use 2~5 psi higher than factory setting depends on course layout. I don't care too much about the low speed steering response or ride comfort because i need better grip and handling at limit. If i am still not happy with the steering feel after playing with the pressures, I would probably upgrade my tires first. Sticky compound + stiff side wall would make a big difference in steering feel and response. Last edited by freeman; 04-10-2008 at 04:27 AM. |

I'll try that out first, of course. But I wonder what can really restore the type of feel we're looking for... on my '03 M3, there was almost too much feel, such that it was borderline harder than I'd like to turn the wheel. But I really liked the connectedness I felt... This ad is not endorsed by this member. Please register or login to hide this ad. |
