That is good to hear! I guess subaru can tell now if the ecu has been reflashed. In your case if the motor goes they cant turn you down for warranty because of the well known issue.

What I'm dreading is all the minor improvements they'll make in '09. A power increase won't bother me, but if they put in stiffer springs, better steering rack, offer Recaros as an option, push-start, etc, I'll be very jealous. Still, I love my car to death, so it won't really bother me...much.
Digital! Don't go soft now! You've been surgically championing the 08 in the face of near potential disaster for weeks, influencing both weak and strong minds young and old to take the plunge. Don't tell us the captain is having second thoughts just cause a few corpses wash past the transom in unfamiliar waters. Sheesh.

BTW, WTFIU with your starter?

lol

I'm still championing the down trodden '08 but, in all honesty, my original intention was always to wait for '09. Sadly, I needed a car and a buddy loves his '04, so I figured, why not?

I believe the test will be more accurate on a car that has been driven a few hundred miles and had time to wear in the parts. Maybe then there will be enough material in the oil to actually see, instead of an engine that hasn't been driven?? If the test on a car that has actually been driven shows no signs, then I should be good.
I'll keep you guys posted...
As promised:
Dealer got the oil sample kit in and I took it in. When I got there the service manager tried to convience me that my car did not need this done, that my car was not affected. I asked to see the service bulletin with the updated VIN#'s. Just as I told him, mine was in the range, and pretty much demanded it was done. I honestly had a hunch that they would just take it back and then tell me it was ok without doing anything. So I told them that I was very interested in this process and would like to watch. Even showed them my copy of the procedure. He said "ok". (wow-right)
The tech did everything to the letter and even let me do the pass/fail test.
Mine passed with flying colors!! The kit even came with a replacement magnetic drain plug and they changed the oil (of course). Overall it was a good "dealer" experience.
If anyone has car in the affected range I suggest having the dealer perform the test just for peace-of-mind. SOA or your dealer should have no issues doing this for a 40k customer.
