It must be a pretty serious and definitive issue if they can be "certain" within 500 miles. I'm guessing they would know much sooner and 500 is the far end. Kind of like...how long can an engine run with no oil in it.

Anything that involves looking through the oil for 1mm chunks of copper is serious business for sure.

yes sir, perhaps in a little while, right now i don't want to anything that would void the warranty... I admit I have little idea about the available mods, but I guess i am in the right place to find out :-)

I was in the middle of buying an STi through Joe Spitz at Carter Subaru when the stop sale hit... The color I wanted was at another dealership, so we had to wait for them to do the inspection before the car could even be driven over to Carter - which was very frustrating when Carter already has the parts needed to do the inspection. Everything turned up roses in the oil and I got the car today. I already read it out with EcuFlash and started looking through the ROM. Looking forward to lots of fun modding this 'company' car!

I'll be curious to see if we find any problem cars in the US after these inspections...

I wonder how many people are holding out for the 09 because of the first year issues

Almost nobody. Dealers aren't going to spread this around, and if you google for it you'll find very little about it. I bet 99% of owners are happy.

The issues aren't that big a deal. We're here in a forum full of enthusiasts who love these cars and want to talk about them all day so stuff comes up. This group is not representative of the buying public.

The paint is pretty bad, but I took my '08 in for clear bra this morning and the place doing it says that most new cars are just as bad.

If I could have waited, I would have but I needed a car right away. So far, the only mechanical issue I've had is with my starter motor, which seems to occur very randomly (hasn't happened since last Friday afternoon). The paint chipping is to be expected with the front fender design so that doesn't bother me; I was going to have the front clear braed anyhow after seeing what my '05 bumper looked like after 3 years.

What I'm dreading is all the minor improvements they'll make in '09. A power increase won't bother me, but if they put in stiffer springs, better steering rack, offer Recaros as an option, push-start, etc, I'll be very jealous. Still, I love my car to death, so it won't really bother me...much.

We are still asuming that only STI's are questioned in the stop sale, but what about all the other 2.5 turbo motors in other models? I havent looked at any other forum to see if a forrester has fallen to this problem or not.
