I want to say this as calm as possible.........

QUIT THE PANIC !

I have owned 5 subarus and can honestly say that nothing has gone wrong with them , even after fairly heavy mods.

I had an 03' Mitsu EVO 8, now that was a true piece of junk, great car on paper , zero dealer support and very poor quality in real life.

You're probably right, maybe I should just calm down.......I just feel bad for the new '08 owners that have to deal with this crap.

I'm gonna take delivery this Sat. Had enough of this BS and finally pulling the trigger on it.

When I first bought the 06 WRX, ppl told me the infamous "glass tranny" horror story.

After two years of owning it, I don't see what the problem is. Of course, I never did a clutch dump. Just drove it normally.

I am pretty sure it will be the same thing for the 08 STi. All cars will have quirks, that's life.

Its nothing more than a worry circus at this point. The test is not meant to be ultimately conclusive, of anything, only something to be done after the fact. The root cause you're referring to has more to do with vendor/supplier QA than anything, we'll likely never hear about what's happened to fix the true problem. Maybe it was a mislabeled box of rejected parts, maybe it was a new QA, maybe the vendor screwed up and said "meh they're good enough"... Who knows... The "root problem" is that bad parts somehow were issued into production.

In retrospect, Subaru's first goal was to find out which cars are potentially affected and prevent them from being sold (thus the stop-sale). The second step was to determine which cars are actually affected (by performing the oil test). I don't really understand how you could be bent against Subaru (or the 08 in particular) because of this, especially once you consider only 10 cars overseas are reportedly the only units affected...

People are quick to explode over something like this but until there are officially recorded occurrences of this in the US, we (as US consumers) really, truly, honestly, are getting worked up over nothing.

From what I've read, they would be in a pile of poo-poo with SOA if they didn't since the letter states only cars that have passed the tests may be sold.

I'm sorry, but look at Subaru's method of ascertaining the problem........root cause analysis? Oh please. Who came up with this method? The janitor on the night shift at the Subaru plant? When I worked for Toyota in mfg, and this happened, heads would have rolled, and believe me, a REAL root cause analysis would have been performed.

Who actually feels comfortable that this procedure will actually determine if your car has a problem? If I had an '08 I would laugh at this, and ALWAYS wonder if/when my engine was going to have problems. Subaru needs to get their heads our of their a**es.
Subaru is noted to be an automotive company with a strong engineering viewpoint. So for them to do a root cause analysis is a much better resolution action than "heads would have rolled". Root cause analysis removes possible issues one step at a time, similar to Six Sigma it will get to a through constant refinement.

I'm sure your time at the Toyota assembly line was very enlightened but I'm sure Toyota would have done a similar action if an issue was found. (Please note the sarcasm)

Echoing what many others have said, Subaru in my opinion did the right thing by stopping the potential for more customer issues. Many other larger car manufacturers would have let the good times roll in the sales department until the flood gates of complaints burst open.

Nobody on this forum likes a fanboi, but it seems my friend, your "hater" status is even more disliked. Maybe the next time you should moderate your tone and words to something civil and educated prior to hitting "Submit Reply"

I would say 98.9% of the owners on here have no had to deal with this crap , as we were not affected.

OMFG if I don't get my car soon, I'm gonna lose my s**t... my ex-wife already saw another STI around town the other day.. I haven't seen one on the road yet yet, but it's been over 2 months already since I ordered the car and every week is yet another "well maybe it'll be here next week" story from the dealer.. I'm getting bored with the Legacy loaner they gave me already - I've been driving it so long, it's going to need an oil change soon!!

As a Subaru technician in the field I just wanted to give all of you concerned Suby addicts the real scoop on what's up, now that we have a solution and it probably won't cost me my job talking about it now. It appears that you have an idea about what the solution entails and so I will go into detail about it since I actually performed a check on an 08 STI today.
Basically there has been a couple of reported cases somewhere in the midwest that the internals on said engines were found faulty resulting in engine replacements. After narrowing down the cars in question Subaru began a stop sale on certain VINS as a precaution to their customers. If anyone has a car within the affected VINS what will happen is an inspection of the oil, check for internal engine bits within the oil and engine rev procedure, and once again an oil consistancy check. This is what I had to do today and as I suspected I found nothing abnormal while testing the brand new vehicle, oil looked normal and no internal bits were found. Again, SOA has us doing this as a precaution and would rather have us spend an hour verifying new engine integrity rather than have a new car crap out on the side of the road. After this procedure has been performed and the car checks out ok it is cleared for sale to the public. Just wanted you guys to here this from the horses mouth and not have to speculate on the status of the Stop Sale issue. Hope this was helpful.

Beats the heck out of how Harley Davidson dealt with a known cam bearing problem.

All owners of affected bikes were told to ride it until it broke and then have it towed to the dealership for tear down and verification of the problem. if it was the bad cam bearing then the motor would be fixed and the bike put back into service.

Not reassuring to an owner who chose to ride his/her bike places instead of trailering it. Being all the way across the country buring up vacation time while waiting in a hotel room for an unknown mechanic, at a strange dealership, as they gutted your vehicle in a procedure that may or may not cost you for repairs.

Or BMW who continued to deny problems with the EFI system for years even while marketing their new EFI system as resolving problems they continued to deny existed when owners of the older system asked about solutions.

Or Honda taking 3 years to roll out a solution to overheating motors and cracked frames on their Gold Wing GL1800 while owners wondered if their bike would split in half on them while riding.

Subaru!

the Twin Cam 88's. all the others just shake themselves apart like normal.

Looks like HD eventually did a recall on the retention bolts, excessive heat, and tensioner shoe for that model. To date there's never been a recall on the bearings.

Not that this is a Harley thread, but I never heard of a TC88 having bearing issues. The issue with that engine is the cam chain tensioner. It would disintegrate and fill the engine with plastic bits. The Evo motor had bad cam bearing issues, but most of us (including me) would get it replaced at about 30K miles.
