1. the latter, the dealer shouldn't sell you that car unless it's tested

2. this is not affecting a lot of cars, no one had a problem here

3. even if it is - yeah you have 5 year /60K warranty - the problem should show up very early too

Sounds kinda fishy to me. What do you think?
I wouldn't worry too much, as stated above the dealer must perform the tests before it's sold (until they've received the "all green" from Subaru HQ). Otherwise, I don't quite understand what you're so confused about. When they get the car, and somehow it IS affected, then you'll be without the car until they can get it fixed. This however, has an EXTREMELY SLIM probability since no US cars have been reported to have this problem yet. Even still, the dealer is required to do the test prior to sale to prove the car is OK.

Can anyone think of a worse thing to do to a brand spankin new engine than rev it up to 6,000 rpm in neutral without any weight behind it? Lol...but not really.

I am going to make sure my car is fully broken in and due for its second oil change before I have them do the test.

Is it likely that they will do the test, without me instructing them to do so?

It's sad to say, but I have to say that I would never buy an '08 due to these issues.

I'm sorry, but look at Subaru's method of ascertaining the problem........root cause analysis? Oh please. Who came up with this method? The janitor on the night shift at the Subaru plant? When I worked for Toyota in mfg, and this happened, heads would have rolled, and believe me, a REAL root cause analysis would have been performed.

Who actually feels comfortable that this procedure will actually determine if your car has a problem? If I had an '08 I would laugh at this, and ALWAYS wonder if/when my engine was going to have problems. Subaru needs to get their heads our of their a**es.

My car was born on 11/07 and when you first start it up after sitting it knocks for a min. or so. i also have a big chip on my front fender. They told me to bring it up and they will take a pic of the chip and check the oil.

Be wary of pg. 7-38 in your Car Manual.

Excerpted...

.
When driving off immediately after
starting the engine, a short-lived operation
noise may be noticed coming from
the engine compartment. This noise is
generated as a result of a check being
performed on the Vehicle Dynamics
Control system and is normal.

.
Depending on the timing of activation
of the brakes, the brake pedal may
seem to jolt when you drive off after
starting the engine. This is a consequence
of the Vehicle Dynamics Control

operational check and is normal.

Hard to imagine the biggest 08 hater on these boards would have had anything better to say.

BTW, what makes you think they don't know the root cause. I'm sure they could make a determination with an engine tear-down, but who wants that? Not SOA and certainly not me!

First of all, please learn to spell before posting. It's "jealous" with an "a"

I'm actually not jealous, in fact, I saw one today and was very impressed with how it looked in black. Very nice.

I'm actually just down on Subaru in general, and not down on the actual year per say.

Subaru has let me down. In fact I was going to buy a Forester this month, but I won't put Subaru on my list now. If this is their actual quality control, I won't even bother looking at them.

you guys are making me crazy with your whining and complaining about Subaru. have you guys noticed that not ONE of postings on this thread have been from someone actually HAVING the problem we are talking about !
I want to say this as calm as possible.........

QUIT THE PANIC !

I have owned 5 subarus and can honestly say that nothing has gone wrong with them , even after fairly heavy mods.

I had an 03' Mitsu EVO 8, now that was a true piece of junk, great car on paper , zero dealer support and very poor quality in real life.
