In the beginning when this car came out and it was priced a bit on the high side, the general opinion was, "well you get a lot for your money".

Now I'm begining to wonder. What all did they cut costs on to provide us with some cooldaddy electronic gizmos?

Of course first run models are going to have their bugs, and with the shear number of cars produced now days, coupled with forums that enable everyone to share their problems/complaints, 5% of 10,000 is a lot more than 5% of a 100...I would think that a car company would now be focused on quality rather than technology?
I think I would rather have a bullet proof/bug free version of the 04-05 model, than SI drive and NAVI.

"Getting a lot for your money"...Sad to say, but look at how much our dollar is really worth.

Looney. This car is a better car than my '05 and it was bullet proof, fast and fun. I've got none of these problems. Brakes make no noise (and I've been driving/braking hard.) I've got no problems with the engine, power or any of that (my only real gripe is that the damn SI drive reverts back to "S" from "S#" when I park it.) I have zero regrets about trading up. Can you say ZERO; I knew you could. :P

I still think that Subaru is putting out a quality product. Yes the STI is more expensive than the last, but Subaru seems to be targeting a different demographic (or expanding the target) with the new Imprezas. I think the car looks much better than the old style which of course is my personal preference.

So far i havent read a post where an '08 died on the street and left them stranded. No one here has posted an issues indicative of the Stop Sale issues; granted no one knows what they are for sure. And if it is a bearing, then it is most likely a bad batch from a vendor. Manufacturing problems occur in every industry. Thats why they all have a quality control and testing department. But sometimes issues dont surface until the product is on the market. This has nothing to do with a new engine or new car design. It was a on time FUBAR. After all they stopped the sale of ALL cars with 2.5L turbos.

for my money this car still has great options at very affordable prices. i went car shopping with a friend that makes much more than i do. The BMW M3 or Audi S4 we drove are 15K+ more than the STI and the Subbie will give them a run for all that extra money...

I'm happy with my purchase and glad that Subaru is making an effort to protect the consumer.

The paint chipping does suck tho...

It is a lot of car for the money. I think it is the most car for the money that I can afford. You wont find a better deal anywhere!

^^^ I really hope so.

So far, these are the things where ppl have problems with:

1. Paint chipping issue.
2. Unknown engine problem that's causing this "stop-sale"
3. Engine whirring noise (related to above?)
4. Brake pad failure
5 Bad factory tune
feel free to add more

Scary thought as to how many people come here to report these things, and how many more that are out there that never gets here.
You keep running the car lean with the stock map you will get problems. You AP the car and get warranty denied for some reason, you got a problem. Either way, this is a lose-lose situation.

I keep trying to figure out if there's a better car. I'm just about past the point of no return on buying my 2008 this week. The only car I can see that is even close to being as interesting is the BMW 135, and it's not out yet in Canada.

But anyway, this is the conclusion I keep coming to: for the price, it's pretty much all there is. In fact, even if I had $30K more to spend, I'm not sure what I could get that would be as perfect for a guy with kids in Canada who likes fast cars.

The above issues do add up....

I totalled my 05 last weekend (spun off mountain road, rolled down 70 feet of rocky hillside, shish-kabobbed by tree trunk - scratched my thumb, no big deal.) I loved every second of the 3 years I drove that car and it obviously saved my ass when I rally-crashed it.

I'd been tempted by the 08's hatch-hotness since it came out and if you asked me after my little "off," I would have been certain I'd have an 08 by this weekend but after getting caught up reading the 08 threads and visiting the dealers that CAN'T sell me the car right now....I'm left pretty unsure about the whole thing. The 135i I drove in the meantime was fantastic and suddenly what seemed a no-brainer is making my head hurt (maybe it was the wreck.)

I can't wait for an 09 so I hope they fix everything REALLY soon or they might miss out on what would have been a very loyal customer.

People that havent really gotten a chance to experience the car cant really make sound decisions. I picked up my PRE-stopsale vin STI last monday. I traded in my 2007 STI with just under 10K miles. Believe me it was hands down a GREAT decisions. I got mudflaps there goes the paint chipping problems, not to mention SUBARU is owning up to that problem too there will be a kit for the damaged area. These are two totaly different cars. When I drove my 07 I loved the speed and handling of the beast but I felt my self asking is this really worth what i spent on it. As ive been driving my 08 the last week I feel SOOO much better about my investment. The car does not drive like a rice rocket. It still has all the balls but feels like a luxury vehicle. Sure the interior is cheap plastic but its good looking cheap plastic. Getting great mpg's in I mode and switch it to S# and the car goes crazy. I will say it needs sways more than the 07 but thats about it. I am EXTREMELY happy with my purchase. I cant say much about the stop sale and hope all the cars are cleared and with no damage, and hope mine is clean too. If we get past all that and the fact that Subaru kept these cars off the road so they dont get damaged, or damaged any further is a good sign.

Thats my 2 cents take from it what you will. Ive read all 37 pages and a lot of it is useless banter from people who arent even giving the car a chance in the first place.

PS: Hard to compare the BMW to SUBARU. I really like the 1 series but it would be WAYYYYY to impractical for me to own that car. So hard for me to compare.

Yes, that one is affecting me. I had to get someone, a complete stranger, to push the fuel door while I pulled on the level to open it.

I dont want a touch up in a brand new 08 with less than 2000 miles that costs 38K. some of these cars are muckerd in the dealer lots from only test drives. Thats alot of money for a paint chipped car that looks 10 years old!

last I cheked the M3's V8 @ 414 HP stomped the S4's 350 HP and even the RS4's 420 HP its one heck of a car but at 60K starting price or so it should be. now the RS4 is around 65K starting price. OUCH!! but I am with you for all that extra money I would hope to walk away from a less expensive car not have him hang tight to my mirror.

I love the STI but they just have way to many issues for me to consider that kind of price right now. I hope the 09 fixes all these bugs (because thats all they are BUGS not catastrophys) its too late for me to buy a new STI but my wife might want one I think at this time Ill save some money and buy an 07 they seem to be bullit proof

What's wrong with the '07's?

My '04 has been no more or less reliable than one could expect.
