Didn't we just go over this?

I thought the point was that there were 10 or so found, but they would have no idea how many are actually out there with the issue.

Unless I missed something.

called my dealer yesterday, he feigned ignorance and said my car is still "on the boat" and scheduled to arrive next week.. when asked about the stop sale order, the sales manager asserted that "some cars were having problems with knocking" (this seems to agree with the description of the problem that we know publicly) and that it "only affected cars already in the US, not those made after April 1 which are still coming over on the boat" (which is kind of interesting, because their previous assertions to me seemed to indicate that my car was already on the boat in March...)

so that's my contribution to this ongoing story.

Good to hear. It's much louder than my LGT was.

I work at a subaru dealer but don't hate me for it. We received news from soa, I am relaying what they told us. The the oil used in the cars affected may be contaminated with copper which could potentially cause failure. They said on monday they would tell us how to detect if the oil is affected and if so how to repair the problem. Hope this is news and not already posted.

Something a lot of people diddnt even think about. If it was the oil I would hate to be the manufacture of the oil.

I'll bet the copper is the diagnostic, not the cause. High copper content in oil is often a sign of excess wear, which would be the case if there were some faulty bearings getting chewed up. Sounds like they are gearing up to run oil diagnostics on all 2.5L turbos. That makes sense... hard to imagine a cheaper way to determine for sure whether a car is affected.

What engine component uses copper?

-Major copper components, in most engines, include the piston-pin bushings, the tach drive busings (at least on Lycomings), and the rocker-arm bushings. Additionally, copper may be used as an underlayment on the engine's main and rod bearings.

Maybe totally unrelated but... Why is there copper particles in diesel engine oil? - Yahoo! Answers

We kinda already knew that it had something to do with bearing wear. Still don't know what is causing it though. off-spec bearings? detonation?

Subaru currently is claiming the oil was contaminated by copper at production, not that the problem caused the contamination. Perhaps checking the oil is just the easiest way to diagnose the problem without even letting us, the dealer, know what the real problem is.

well, if that's the case, then a thorough engine flush will help... But if this oil was like this from the manufacturing stage, I'm afraid the damage has been done already.

went to my dealer yesterday and they said Subaru is going thru and clearing each individual VIN. They have an STI with a 828XXX VIN that has been cleared and can be sold now where my STI with a 828XXX VIN has not been cleared yet. Dont understand this madness, but it is really pissing me off...

But why does this not make sense. Why would they rush the SOLD units??

I had the same question, but there didnt seem to be any method for how they select which cars get cleared first.
