Totally. The FWD is the big thing stopping me from getting the MS3, but in general it's just a different class of car. When I imagine myself walking outside to go do something, it's the STI I want to be getting in to.

The MS3 is sure fast though. I was surprised. 263 HP in a light little car, 280 ft/lbs of torque.

I wasn't disrespecting the MS3. I know it's a fast car, esp for a FWD.
Just saying when most people narrow down choices, it wouldn't be that many glaring differentations. (AWD, $10,000 more)
Most people on here have cross-shopped 135i, evoX, g37 coupe, and possibly a 335i..
thats all i meant =P

don't know about you guys, but owning a STi is a prestige for me. You can call it fanboyism or whatever, but that's how I take it. In Japan they call them "Subarists"

For me the MS3 seems like it's at the upper limit of the chassis design. More power through the front wheels is going to make it handle like a dog and even though it's only a fwd aluminum block 4 cylinder car, it's 3140 lbs vs the STI's 3373 lbs (BBS). So the STI has nowhere to go but up with performance both in acceleration and handling if you like to play with your car (which you digging through forums pretty much means yes ). Where mazdaspeed did their job and tuned the car for the consumer already, not leaving much to be done.

Not that I dislike the MS3 talk but...this thread is getting pretty bloated, pretty fast. Make an MS3 vs 08 sti thread lol :P. My dealer said an update should be out by subaru tomorrow or friday...can't buy my sti until they remove the stop sale! Arg!

It's a nice freeway "roll" racer, but that 280 lbft of TQ to the front wheels on the MS3 will hamper its cornering capability.... Give me a 250hp and 190 lbft TQ Honda Civic over an MS3.

We're definitely going a bit off topic here, (sorry) but if anyone's interested in making a really nice handling and decently fast FF car, click on the link below:

BTW: I'll be calling my local dealer also for any updates on the Stop Sale Order....

No... the only place that appeared was in the "update" that turned out to be bogus.

The new range of VIN starting with 800140 was confirmed as bogus? If thats the case, thats good news seeing as pretty much everyone was in there.

Not mine, unfortunately. Seems odd since I got my car many weeks before others here that have much lower numbers. The latest statement my dealer has matches the other update: original number range but stop sale on ALL 2.5L turbo models.

All of you folks who are calling the MS3 "a girls car" or "not in the same class as the STI" are drunk. Seriously, the only downside to that car is FWD. I owned one for a year and the ONLY reason I switched to an STI was for AWD to go skiing in the Cascades (where they enforce chains for no AWD). You can own a MS3 OTD for under $25k. Simple mods and you are well over 300hp.

And who are we kidding? I remember when the first shots of the 08 STi came our, all of us over at Mazda3 forums were like "give us back our Speed3!"

I'm a new fan of Subaru, but you blink and you might get pwned by a Speed3 from a light or a roll.

I hate to bloat this thread because I've been using it for info quite regularly- That being said, I absolutely respect the MS3. I've seen what it can do, and I compare it lovingly to the SRT-4. But, just like the SRT-4, the MS3 is one of those cars that had GREAT intentions, and a perfect body/engine to work with, but seemed to just sit on the fence of performance and cheaper practicality with FWD. Whereas with the STI, you have the backing of a true enthusiast brand.

So wait, are you telling me Mazda is not a true enthusiast brand? Thats pretty arrogant considering Subaru is pretty much absent from any motorsport except rally. Considering the LeMans victory for Mazda amongst other motorsport victories.

And how do call the "fence" of performance 262 hp and 285 lb/ft or torque for $25k?

That was just an arrogant fanboi reply right there.

Oh yah, and you should watch this YouTube - Mazda Furai : Race Track to see what they are preparing for 2010.
