I verified the initial notice with my dealer's service manager today. I was in the shop to get my 08STi's shock sensor activated and the sensitivity set. He showed me the original letter (which matches the first one here). He showed me a 2nd one that is different than the hoax that was also posted here. It does expand the affected number of vehicles but does NOT include the STi (and possibly not the WRX but i don't remember).

As with the original letter, my 08 is before the "issue". The service manager doesn't know (yet) what the actual problem was and, as I bounced out "efi mapping" and "rings/pistons", he said he hopes it's bearings since bearings are an easy fix. NO ACTUAL INFO OF WHAT IS THE PROBLEM HAS BEEN RELEASED TO DEALERS YET.

my service manager said that, of all the possible models/units affected, they'd only had one at their dealership (2 locations) that was affected; which blows away the idea that NO us units were affected.

The point that a lot of people here seem to be missing is that while some US cars are included in the list of potentially affected cars, so far none have actually exhibited the problems. So sure, some US cars are covered by the current list of cars that MAY be affected, but none HAVE been yet.

so on what basis did Subaru determine the vin range? Is it from the the data collected by the cars exhibiting the symptoms? Unless there is a catastrophic engine failure across the globe, there is too little data to pin point the mfg date. Most likely they already know the problem.

Any answer to that would be speculation. That Subaru picked a VIN range and took VERY aggressive action should be applauded.

Most mfgrs wouldn't do that. It wouldn't matter if they were US, Bavarian, or Japanese; that sort of pre-emptive action is rare these days.

I certainly applaud Subaru for taking action, but it could be because it is their only choice. Depending on the problem it may just be wiser to do the stop sale in the case where there is catastrophic engine failure on a global scale. I am sure this wasn't a decision they came to lightly so I'm thinking whatever it is must be more severe than just a simple tune issue hypothesized by some others on here.

I'm applauding the way Subaru is handling the paint chip issue...very aggressive

Is real. Bought my STI on 4/5 and wasn't allowed to drive it off lot because apparently is missing a "backed-ordered part from Japan" as the salesman calls it. Looked at forums and found this thread. Guess i won't be getting my car anytime soon.

In regards to the stop sale, I don't think anyone really knows if any of the jdm 2.0l models have been affected or even the usdm 2.5l (all speculation at this point).

Genereally speaking, if you're wondering why the jdm 2.0l is superior to the usdm 2.5l, it's Subaru's flagship engine (they're bread and butter) and because it's used for wrc homoligation.

I just don't see a tune issue affecting the entire range of 2.5 turbo engines all with different tunes, i.e. legacy, impreza and forester.

Good point

I have a question and if someone is able to answer I'd much appreciate it!

I put a $2000 deposit on this car over a month ago (required to order it), however I have not traded in my car, or signed the paperwork (I signed a loan information paper). Yesterday, my dealership received the car, however because of this mumbo-jumbo with Subaru, I cannot drive it, nor can they sell it. They have no idea when it will be fixed, or when I can pick it up. Do I have any right to my deposit back?

I would say YES!, but I would wait to see what the fix is before I decided.

That is my general opinion on it, however I'd like to hear what someone who works at a dealership would say about it. I hate coming off as an unreliable person, I have never backed down from any deal, but this happening to a $35,000 car I'm about to sign onto actually makes me feel queezy.
