I actually took my car back and said mu tune sucked basically. The service manage told me to drive harder. I cant make it knock in s#, but most of my driving was in I or rarely s for the first 500 miles under 4,000 rpm. I would think in these modes and in and under that rpm my car would experience this issue. The car is so quiet and I have been on the freeway a lot ( 4k in two months ) I have not noticed this issue at all. I have seen unusual puffs of smoke on occasion tho

well i'm just glad that subaru is at least addressing this as soon as possible. after i got my VW they had a recall on my car that had to deal with the MAF. it was like an inquisition because it seemed that the dealership was looking for reasons to void the warranty (and this was before i started modding the car).

Yes they, did, for the original issues in 2004. Then once they started loosing money on warranty claims in 2005 and later, they did nothing. Premature CAT failures, condensation in tail lights, massive amounts of TSBs, etc. Plus the buyback was more because of a PR issue with the misstated HP.

Wow, 30 people watching this thread. Impressive.

I'm very curious to see if there's correlation (and causation) between the stock tune and the "internal wear issue..." or if it's truly just a defective engine internal.

My dealer comfirmed production date 1-8-08 and chassie # 825183 only and has no knowlede of an update. My hunch has been the tune.

I just got a call from the sales manager at my dealership confirming that SCI is looking into the issue to see if any Canadian cars have been affected. They are going to check the VIN ranges and see if they can narrow it down a bit more. From what he told me, SCI will be contacting customers that have purchased a car in the VIN-range that could be affected. This is definitely real.

I asked if there were any more details about the knocking noise but he said SCI didn't provide anymore information. While this type of stoppage definitely brings up thoughts of just how serious this issue is, it's definitely amazing, as mentioned above, that Subaru is doing this.

Honestly, I would still like to know exactly what the problem is and what failed but at least I know SCI is looking into it now (as they tend to be behind on things sometimes.)

Just speculation....but the problem could likely already be identified. The hold up may be that as soon as they release the problem, they will be bombarded with "So what's the solution!??!?!" type questions from owners (and rightfully so). The delay may be in their evaluation of what the possible remedies could and should be.

Either way...this has delayed my '08 purchase, but as of yet...has not derailed it. I like that Subaru appears to be stepping up to the plate, and how this plays out will be huge for their future.

Just got this e-mail from my sales guy :
"Your car is not affected by the stop sale notice. I ran a VIN history search on Subarunet for your vehicle and there is no open service notices for your vehicle. Also, your production date was earlier than the vehicles that have the stop sale notice.
"

The disease seem to be spreading...

IMMEDIATE STOP SALE ORDER
TO: GLR-- MAR-- NWR-- SCR-- SDC-- SWR Dealers
FROM: Subaru of America, Inc.
DEPARTMENT: Service
DATE: 04/07/2008

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Legacy vehicles have been added to the Stop Sale

We regret to inform you that we must place an immediate stop sale order on all of the 2008/2009 Subaru Impreza, Forester and Legacy vehicles equipped with a 2.5L Turbo Engine produced with the beginning chassis number and later as shown below.

Model
Body Type
Chassis Number
Production Date

Forester Wagon 701045 or later 2008/01/08 or later

Legacy 2.5GT-LTD 222825 or later 2008/02/04 or later
2.5GT-B 222958 or later 2008/02/04 or later
OBK 2.5XT-LTD 353835 or later 2008/02/01 or later

Impreza Sedan 523363 or later 2008/01/08 or later
Wagon 825183 or later 2008/01/08 or later

The reason for this immediate Quality Assurance action is that there have been several reports of “Engine Knocking Noise” from other markets on vehicles produced after the production dates listed.

Initial investigation confirms an internal wear issue on the failed units.

In the interest of preventing any possibility of failures for our customers, we have chosen to isolate any potentially affected vehicles by ceasing sales of the potentially affected units until the root cause and correction can be identified.

All the other displacement engines and the 2.5L Natural Aspirated Engine are excluded from this action.

Your region/distributor will be contacting you with a detailed list of affected vehicles assigned to your dealership. However, dealer trades cannot be tracked so please be aware of the affected VIN range.

If you have a vehicle in inventory that falls into the affected vehicle range, please ensure that your sales and service staff are immediately notified that the unit is un-saleable until further notice from SOA or your region/distributor.

If any of those vehicles has an unusual engine noise, please notify the SOA Technical Helpline immediately with all of the details and submit an E-QMR.

Should a customer bring an affected vehicle into your service department for an unusual engine noise, please immediately arrange that they are given the use of a clean SSLP vehicle and notify the Technical Helpline and submit an E-QMR.

You will be contacted shortly thereafter on how to proceed.
