Unless you're implying this happens no matter which SI drive setting you're in, which setting were you in? If we look at what's different for 2008, SI drive is a reasonable suspect on this issue. I run in Sport# all the time (wondering why anyone would run in the other two anyway) and have heard nothing that causes me concern, and my vehicle is in the target batch from the original notice. However, I did switch down to just Sport today and did notice what I would call "different" noises (and reduced performance of course). My theory is that SI drive is damaging the beast (engine) by trying to tame it in the "go slow" settings.

If SI drive is the culprit, why is SoA stopping sales on 2.5L turbo WRX and Foresters?

The more I tried to make it knock in second and third from 3000rpm in s# the faster the car felt. I will try it in other gears, but I plan on leaving it is s# for now on

Once again, you completely missed the point. It's really not a hard concept to grasp. Quoting something means nothing without a proven source:

I just got this from my dealership...

IMMEDIATE STOP SALE ORDER UPDATE
ALL SUBARU DEALERS

Subaru of America would like to apologize for the problems its customers are facing with their recently purchased vehicles. If a customer brings in a vehicle suffering from the noted internal wear issue, dealerships are instructed to provide them with an extended warranty, free of charge, as a gesture of good faith.
OMG! Look... Another update! I don't know why I'm even trying to explain this stuff to you.

While I agree about the info in the thread, you're still the one that started by giving people attitude in the first place and you expect not to get some in response? I have been overly polite considering your tone in this thread. Now you're taking your ball and leaving? Are we supposed to thank you for calling us comical/delusional? How old are you?

Anyhow, I can't explain my feelings anymore clearly and I think this sub-thread has run its course. Carry on.

I can't reproduce that knock either. The engine simply burbles are growls like it normally does. Now, I only have 300-ish kilometres on it, so the issue might not present itself until later on or after I've put my foot into it some more.

Part of me still thinks this is the most elaborate hoax ever, seeing as my dealership has never even heard of this.

Wait a sec. This means two things:
Internal wear? is there something mechanically wrong with it then?
extended warranty? so they will treat it as warranty. their way of saying F*** you to aftermarket?

Seems to me that anything wrong enough to cause actual sounds you can hear is more than enough to be detected by a Blackstone oil test. I'd skip trying to make it knock at a certain RPM and send off for the UOA immediately. In a few days you'd have the truth...

Sorry to say that this isn't a hoax! I am a tech at a Subaru dealership and I have accessed Subarunet.com and this is in fact a legitimate bulletin (at least the first one) it was posted on the 4th. I won't post the original link because it may compromise my job. It sounds to me that SOA has had a number of concerns regarding a knock and that they haven't figured out the cause as of yet. The fact that they are this serious about it shows that they are prepared to take all measures to repair this. As far as it saying an internal issue makes no sense if they haven't figured out what the cause is. IMHO I believe it is a tuning issue that will be remedied with an updated reflash. If it does turn out to be something major which warrants an engine rebuild, suggesting faulty piston rings or bearings, they may just have the shortblocks replaced or rebuilt by us techs. If this is the case I would suggest doing some research on your dealerships service department. There's not much to mess up since these engines are relatively easy to rebuild, but yes there are some idiots working in the service department. Again, I believe this may just be a tuning issue! Just don't panic I'm sure this will get resolved.
Also, I read a post where some guy is taking advise from his parts guy.....sorry but parts are cool and all but they know nothing!

Just reread the bulletin and the part that says "Initial investigation confirms an internal wear issue on the failed units" sounds like they are saying this condition will cause internal wear issues and not that these affected vehicles have internal wear issues. Of course a knock can lead to internal wear if not fixed, what SOA helpline engineers have to find out is the root of the knock, again IMHO sounds like a faulty tune.

for your dealership. I've had it confirmed from mine, they requested me to call or bring the car in if i had any concern, or if there are any strange noises (beyond the usual), and told me to hang tight 'till they get more concrete info for me.
