Why does everyone ask this, it's simple numbers.

So I wonder how this is going to affect resale value for our cars? Especially for ones that never end up showing signs of this issue but with the "potential" for problems. I'm going to go out on a "limb" and say it won't exactly be helping with the resale

Well, next week will be definitely be interesting as more details are released.

I wonder if the cause of the problem is truly a part failure or if it has something to do with the wonderful stock tune. It's not like a bunch of '07 STI's haven't gone down for the count due to the stock tune....

We will see.

I would hope to god that it was just the stock tune, although from the release by SoA it doesn't sound like it is that simple. That would be easy to take care of by Subaru or the aftermarket.

It's a faulty piston ring. No AP will fix that unfortunately

Subaru would not release a bulletin like this, stopping sales of cars, for just a tune/ECU flash issue (if they knew for sure that was the case). I had a pre-ordered Mazda RX-8 back in 2003 so I've been through all this junk before. For a tune, they just reflash all the cars on the lot, then continue sales. From the sounds of it, the failures that caused this warning were very catastrophic in nature. Unless the stock tune was too lean (which we all know it isn't) I wouldn't see the tune as being the problem.

And for all of you who are about to jump ship, you should first feel good about how Subaru is handling this. Mazda makes some awesome cars, but they are the WORST company when it comes to standing behind their product. You can do a search on rx8club.com for all the users who had legit warraty claims denied. Mostly because Mazda was losing money on the RX-8 and decided "no more warranty fixes" for the most part.

Now, I dont want a reman'ed or rebuilt engine either. I would love that option of taking a check and getting a built motor. I'm not ready to jump ship just yet.

Some dude posted an update to the original bulletin, stating that the cause of the problem was faulty piston rings. Some ppl say that the update never happened, so this maybe someone trying to add fuel to the fire. But like you said, it's probably not an easy fix, though I wish it was.

Well, i'm affected, and have the info confirmed by my dealer thru email. No noises yet for me
(except when i snagged 4th in a downshift instead of 2nd, it didnt like that)
Just asked to be kept in the loop on developments, and got a name in the service dept to call if i have any concerns, or get any noises...
So far so good, but the uncertainty sucks, i was planning to go Stg1 soon, think i'll hold off on that till things become clearer...
