I don't know why people are so against this...you have a company that is saying "hey we f**ked up and want to fix it." and so many people are willing to jump ship from that sort of commitment. who gives a s**t who rebuilds your engine...it is covered under warranty...and if you dyno it and it gives some crazy numbers then just take it back and be like "new engine plz."

I applaud Subaru for coming out with this early (even though I suspect that's more to cover their own ass)
But these fact is, most people sure as hell didn't pay $35k for a car to have motor failure driving off the lot. Not everyone wants to "tune" their cars, either. Also, an unopened shortblock is always nicer to have. I don't think it's people so much against this, but more rather shock and disappointment this has happened on their new purchase. Pretty understandable.

I had a S54 M Coupe when BMW recalled that engine. I believe it was because the rod bearings were manufactured out of spec and weren't getting enough lubrication. It's been a few years, don't remember the exact cause but I do know how they fixed it. They swapped blocks with a factory rebuild. I would guess SOA will do something similiar. Having the dealer do a repair like this would probably cost SOA alot more and they wouldn't have any quality controls.

I got a new block at 22k miles. Worked out fine. Was without my car for 9 days

I'll probably send off an oil sample for analysis. Might come in handy

I agree. Subaru warrantied my modded as hell 04 STi. I do feel loyal and accept a rebuild with the same warranty. I rather have one individual build my car vs a production line. Im upset too, but its not the end of life.

^ Yeah that is a different story. If we get new blocks as opposed to repairing our current ones,
I would not mind as much.

I completely understand, but $35k for an STi isn't a lot considering what you are getting. Subaru had a f**ked up situation, I would think the community of STi owners would at least recognize that Subaru is doing what they can to support their owners. I don't care that my car may receive some personal attention...it is probably more than what attention the engine was given at the mass produced factory.

i am just gonna wait n see. idle speculation serves no purpose other than getting folks all wound up fer no real reason. we haven't even heard what the actual problem exactly is yet.

That's true too.. like I said, I understand from their view too.. just sucks. More in hoping that dmg wasn't done to overall longevity.

Kind of fishy that Subaru would release this info on Friday and let it stew over the weekend. It would make sense to release this info on monday and be able to address peoples concerns.

Can't believe there is 10 pages of worried reponses. Don't put too much weight on things you read over the internet. I'll worry about it when it's an offical from Subaru.

It is official from Subaru. Call your local dealership, they can confirm. I've called, several others have called. It's official.

They officially released the info asap to prevent the dealerships from selling any more tainted cars. That shouldn't wait till Monday. They didn't release the info to us. They released the info to the dealerships first and now we've found out and someone's posted it on the internet. Pretty simple. I don't think your understanding the purpose & seriousness. The more cars they can prevent from getting into the hands of consumers, the less money they will loose.

What I want to know is when did they find this out, and when did they correct it at the manufacturing plant? The cars pretty much come from the same factory so that means majority of the 2.5L STi is affected by this defect worldwide?

And even if your car is ok now, with these defective rings, your engine is constantly operating at the edge of "kaboom"?
Seriously, http://www.efecte-d.com/wp-content/u.../03/picard.jpg

So this is more like a leak to us? I talked to a friend over at a dealship, and this is indeed confirmed. The funny thing is, SoA only gave them VIN# for the cars they had on the lot and none for the ones they sold. I hope SoA is not trying to cover this up so only the people that are actually experiencing the problem will come forward. And the others will drive around, not knowing when their engines could go as well...

After I read this post I ran my car a little on the hard side on a backroad to work and than again when I came home. Even tho I diddnt redline it I thought if anything happened it would have then. Who knows maby after 90k miles it decides to let go I can refer back to this recall and get a new short block.
