Default Re: Install AP now or wait?

I've installed things on my previous cars, including spark plug wires, basic things like short shifters, changed out a hood a time or two, put a bumper on and off many a times, put in lights and all of those basic things... But when it comes to my ECU I have never personally swapped out or flashed it before. Much less have I ever had a mechanism like an Access Port, which let's you go back and forth real time. On my '04 R32, I got the GIAC chip but someone installed it for me, and I didn't buy the remote that would allow you to adjust the maps from different octanes and back to stock. Can anyone in the Washington DC area help me with my '08 STi with doing the quick and easy install of the Access Port, and possibly even show me how to use it? If so, I'll definitely give you a ride around in it afterwords, and you can come back after the car is more acclimated to the new map(s)... I respect my new car, and I'm not ashamed to ask for some help, so I don't hurt the car or myself...

Thanks,
HASTI

My 5 year old daughter loves my car - she called my blue 02 wagon 'scooby' and now calls the new DGM STI 'vader'. I LITERALLY read the directions to her and let her plug in the AP and flash stage 1; she was very excited that she got to do the first 'mod' on the new car (she had to explain what a 'mod' was to her mother). Cobb has made it pretty much idiot proof; if something happens during the flash it is going to happen when you are and expert or a noob, it's pretty much beyond your control. If you can read you don't need any help.

I would install the AP on day 1 - in my opinion the stock map is unsafe for the motor. Just because you have the new map on the car doesn't mean you have to drive it like you stole it - you can still break the car in however you want.

So if I don't do it myself I'll be transformed into a 5 year-old girl? I better do this immediately myself!

The upside is that even after the transformation you would still be able to install it

From what I understand an AP cannot be used on more than one car period. Anyone else confirm?

AP V1 won't work on the 07+ cars

They're also motor/car specific.

AP's arent motor/car specific, the maps are. At least that was my understanding. And also I would unmarry my accessport from my LGT, so there would be only one car. But since you need a 07+ then I need a V2

I understand that it "marries" to your car. Hence, you can only use it on that car "at a time". So you can "divorce" the AP to put into another car. The only exception is that it has to be the same model(someone confirm this?). So if you buy an AP for a 06 WRX, the next owner has to use it on a 06 WRX(?).

Hey guys...pardon the noob question.

What does doing the Cobb Stage 1 do to your warranty? I understand that if a mod can not be proven to be the cause of an warranty issue that they can not deny the claim, but how would this effect things?

Hope to be getting in new STi soon and want to do this as my first mod.

Thanks!

There are NO guarantees when it comes to aftermarket mods and MFG warranties...only varied personal experiences and opinons.

That being said an overwhelming percentage of posts speak very highly of the 08 STI AP as well as past AP versions for previous model Subies. Plus you can always use the AP to flash the ECU back to stock b4 you take your car into the dealer.

So do your research (you can find tons right here on IWSTI.com) and make an informed choice. I decided to do stage I AP on my STI...but because it is my daily driver and I will put lots of miles on her, I have opt'ed to not go Stage II (....yet)

As mentioned above my post, it could technically void your warranty, at least on the engine, but I'm willing to accept that since I've had no problems with my '05 and stage 1/2 (knock on wood) and secondly, my dealership is relatively mod friendly.

I did a few WOT pulls in 2nd and 3rd to about 5k and once again, while absolutely no audible knock (possibly due to the 94 octane), the car definitely hesitates slightly, then rockets off, then hesitates at 5k then continues on its merry way (stopped at around 5.5k.) I also notice that on/off throttle transitions are rough too. I'll be installing the AP tomorrow.

I think the main reason for this post is that I'm trying to reassure myself to go stage 1 without a boost gauge. I swore I'd never do something like that and on my '05 I had all my gauges first. Then again, a friend of mine has been running stage 1 on his car on the track without a boost gauge and his car is still running strong. Time to suck it up and just do it.

Well, my Stage 2 was confirmed to have no boost issues so I'm guessing this is true for Stage 1 since all of the stock restrictions are in place, aside from the mapping.
