Default Re: My Price on the STI

As much as I agree that the price of the new STI is a bit much, even if it's still somewhat around the old price (within a couple thousand I think...)

I can't really compare an STI to a C6 Vet. Different car, different tarket market, different wants/needs.

I purchased the STI because I need 4 doors! Therefore, I would never consider a C6 even if it was cheaper than an STI!

I know some people don't need 4 doors and so the C6 or new BMW is a viable option based on price alone...

Ether way, a brand new STI in Canada is about $50,000USD! A new C6 Vet (base model) is about $70,000USD.... so for us in Canada, the prices are still quite a bit different!

Email exchange with my dealer contact today.

Hi salesguy,

Any word on what the selling price is going to be on the new STIs? I'm definitely interested, but not at MSRP

Thanks

I will have to see the availablility of them before getting an exact quote for you. I guess you won't be paying over MSRP??
We should be able to give from $700-$1000.00 discounts on them, depending on options.
The STI's will be here around mid-jan. I have two coming around then, 1 Dark Gray and 1 Silver.
Should I call you when they come in?

One more thing. Before anyone here decides to run out and drop 45k on a STi here's a couple other brand new cars that are in the same price range (within a couple of grand) that you should consider over a subaru.

MSRP Mercedes-Benz SLK350

MSRP BMW 335xi

MSRP Porsche Caymen

MSRP Lotus Elise

How bout this. You pay $44k for your STi over a 60 month span @ a 5% interest rate, anyone know the answer? Yep you'd be shelling out $830 dollars a month to drive your beloved STi. Granted I love mine, but this price jump is too much for me to justify. If you need a four door a 335i's make over 400whp on just an exhaust and tune. I dont see why you people want to spend $45k on a mid 13 second car. If you dont want it for speed, then buy a 4 door g37 and save yourself some money.

Of the 4 you mentioned, 3 will spend more time at the dealer being repaired then you will be driving it.

i know a little while ago i read an article about the price of aluminum going up. i wonder if this practically $10,000 increase in cost reflects this.

yeah, you could get a c6 for that. but would you be able to drive it in the snow? seriously though... one of my biggest arguments for the sti was the bang for buck. its still got the bang, but now its coming at a serious price

I hate it when my computer crashes when I just finished writing my entire post out so here we go again!

Chrewchief, I completely agree with what you have said above. I think the price of the new STI is getting a bit too high. Although it's still a fairly good price for what you get, I agree however, that once you get into the $40,000 range, it opens up the door for a lot of other high performance cars/options.

However, the cars that you have compared to the STI are for a completely different target market. Only the 4 door BMW would be considered apples to apples, the rest are oranges!

I need 4 doors, and therefore, even if those cars are in the same price range, I wouldn't even consider them in my next buying decision.

I need 4 doors, I need something good in Snow. I need something that is FAST, I want something that is AWD! Therefore, for someone like me (the STI's target maket) it's still one of the only cars in it's class that can give me all that!

Now for someone who doesn't need all that, fine, there are def other cars out there that are a better Value/Option.

Trust me, if I wanted a dedicated track car or didn't need 4 doors or AWD, the STI probably would even be on the list... (well maybe!)

For your buds to the north (Canada), the STI sells for $50,000USD! The C6 is like $70,000! I think the Porsche is in the $65,000 range...!

So even those cars you have listed above, arn't in the same price range as the STI ($hitty for us!)

I really don't think the Price matters as much once you figure out what you need a car to do for you. If all the cars that meet your needs are in the same price range, it doesn't matter what the price is of other cars that don't meet those needs (even if they are cheaper!)

Jay

I also want to reiterate that the STi isn't targeted to sell at $44k. The only places that are selling that are TRYING to work you over with all their markups and dealer fees. I mean seriously...
Quote:
+$2000 (Market Adjustment)
+$354 (Motor Vehicle Fee)
+ $199 (Doc Fee)
+$7.50 (Tire Tax)
COME ON!!!!!

These fees are garbage, and the dealer is abusing their customers and rubbing it in their faces. If people are willing to pay, it won't get any better and dealers will just keep on raping customers. I understand the higher prices since they're including more expensive wheels and a cool navigation/10spkr stereo options, but honestly, selling a Honda Civic for $50,000 doesn't mean they're trying to compete with midrange Mercedes, BMW and Porsche models because nobody in their right mind would ever shell out that kinda cash for a Civic. Charging $44k for an STi is the same stupidity becase it takes 10 seconds of research to know you can easily get it for WAY less than that. IMO, You can only compare cars that are similarly priced (i.e. within $2-3k) that have similar features and target markets. Otherwise, as stated before its apples/oranges.

Vette vs STi? Maybe some would call that a practical comparison price-wise, but I couldn't live with a Vette. I also need AWD (Denver) and really want 4 doors, but I love hittin' the track and I also fly radio control helicopters. What to do, what to do!?! Hehe- STi hatchback for me, please!

I understand exactly what your saying about the 4 doors being much better for daily life. So you bought your current STi for a hauler? The STi originally started as a low 30k car that was as close as a average person could get to owning a mean mother fukkin rally car that muscle cars think twice before talkin trash. Subaru has obviously changed there marketing to someone who wants a little get-up-and-go, can still carry alot of stuff and doesnt mind paying 800+ a month. What happened to the days were the STi was known for being incedible for 32k. Hell it made car of the year in road and track back in 04. Now your paying 45k for a so/so car with AWD. Why do you want an STi so bad? I dont get it. I didnt buy a 335xi, g35/g37, corvette, etc, because i didnt want to spend over 30k (I spent a little over with the STi). You used to be able to get above average performance for the 30k bracket it sat in. Now subaru offers average/below average for the price there asking. I don't know about you guys but when I dedide to spend $45k it wont be on a subaru. I'll stop now, because im sure we could go back and fourth for a while. Your gonna buy one, so good luck and enjoy it. I hate that there over priced and garbage, so subaru loses me as a future customer. Out with the old in with the new, right?

I think you make a very good point. There are two kinds of folks who buy STI's. First is the group that wants performance, but needs four doors and a back seat. The second ....

... is that kind of person. Kinda like me. I don't often carry more than one other person in my car, I bought the STI in spite of the four door design because it offered a unique combination of performance for a competitive price.

To be fair, my local dealer quoted me $32.7K for a 2008 STI . There is some truth to the contention that $40K+ for the STI is only due to dealers trying to make a quick buck. Many dealers have already agreed to sell for under MSRP.

I bet there is some of that, for sure. Subaru is a small car company, with aspirations to become a little bigger. I can't entirely blame them for attempting to acquire a larger customer base at the risk of alienating the existing smaller customer base. But it's a risky move. In my experience a Subaru kind of person is a little quirky and wierd, even the "Joe Average" types are a bit odd . There are plenty of boring mainstream cars out there, I hope Subaru doesn't get lost amongst all the competition.

I agee 100%! Although, I'm not totally counting out the idea of getting a 08/09 STI in 2011/12....

I agee that if the STI is in the $40,000 range, it's in a new class of car that it can't IMO compete with.
