Default 08 STi brake noise

Ive had my 08 Sti for about two months and my brakes are making a squeeking/grinding noise whenever im coming to a stop.i took it to the dealership twice the first time i took it they told me the rotors were warped so they resurfaced them after that it was good for about a week or two. the second time i took it the told me that the brakes were dirty and that the noise was normal for performance brakes. i was wondering if any one else has the same problem? also what do u guys think i should do?????

I had that problem last weekend. Pulled the pads to investigate and haven't had the problem come back since. I just assumed I got a freak pebble stuck in there that was dislodged when I removed the pads.

Welcome to the world of high performance brakes. Get used to it, they are noisy, especially when cold. It's not a design flaw -- I believe it's more rooted in the idea that brakes should always be 'quiet'.

The noise I was getting was nothing like any performance brake system I've ever heard. It was a very rough grinding noise. I think it's more than a coincidence that it went away when I investigated the pads.

I have Hawk Autox pads on my other car, they squeek like a mofo but stop awsome and they've never made a noise like this.

I've got about 800 miles on mine and I haven't gotten any noise as of yet. My '05 never did make any squealing noises.

People often use the term warped rotors but my understanding is that the rotors don't actually warp, it is the transfer of brake pad material to the rotor that causes an uneven surface which results in degraded performance and a pulsation feeling on the pedal. This could also result in a grinding type of noise.

Most shops will repair this by resurfacing the rotors. This removes the brake pad material that has built up on the rotor. You can do it yourself by using an aggressive brake pad or often by just rebedding the stock pads. You should always rebed the pads if the rotors have been resurfaced before doing any agressive braking.

To rebed the pads, get up to speed say 60 mph and brake medium pressure to 20 mph. Do this a few times to warm the pads up. Once they are warm get up to 60 then get on the brakes hard enough to activate the ABS. Do not come to a full stop (otherwise you will dump pad material back onto the rotor) Do this a couple of times. Drive the car using the brakes as little as possible and not coming to a full stop until the rotors cool off, say 10-15 minutes. YMMV

As other posters have mentioned you might have a rock in there that the shop missed or the pad is binding. At this point I would remove the pads, check for any binding and reinstall.

This is common for performance brake pads and you shouldn't worry about it. You hear squeaking when pad material is unevenly transferred to the rotor. Here are two things you can do to minimize it:

-do occassional hard stops instead of gentle, light pressure ones every time. Get some heat into the pad so you wear more pad material onto the rotor. You have an STI, use it!
-Do a bedding in procedure - search the internet. (I disagree with some things Couper has said, please read this.) Basically it involves several increasingly powerful stops from 50mph or so down to 10mph. Couper - Do NOT hit ABS while bedding in pads, and do not come to a complete stop or you will unevenly transfer pad material to the rotor. The idea is to transfer pad material to the rotor EVENLY. You must do this 6-7 times or until you either smell brake pads or your brakes fade. Try not to hit your brakes from that point on and park the car to let them cool. Mine are still hot after 15 minutes, I let them cool an hour. Do not engage your parking brake, just put it in gear. A successful bed in will make your rotors look greyish, or brownish.

I know this stuff because I track my other car, a corvette z06, and have bought pads from many manufacturers and researched them quite a bit. Race pads are much worse and only dont squeak after getting up to track temps. Some people have had luck with anti-squeak grease behind the pad, but that never worked for me. There may be different pads available in the future that dont squeak (ceramic, etc)- keep your eyes open.

That description sounds normal for the Brembo brakes. Can you tell me whether the frequency of the brake noise changes based on the temperature of the brakes? For example, does it occur more frequently when the brakes are cold as opposed to when they are hot?
