Yes, make Subaru fix any defects on the car to your complete satisfaction. But for the new owners out there, don't expect these brake pads to be track worthy at all. Maybe some day Subaru will put some decent pads in these stoppers, but until then your best bet is aftermarket.

At least go read EvoM before you make the jump to an Evo so that you are well informed. Your neighbor may be having no problems, but there are a lot more gripe threads over there than there are here. Maybe you got a lemon. I'd hate to see you get rid of the STI for an Evo, only to spend time on EvoM complaining about how it's hard to shift into gear, burns the clutch all the time, surges and stalls periodically, won't start when it's warm, the seats are falling apart before it leaves the showroom, the gas pedal breaks off, etc. Ain't nobody winning quality awards in 2008.

Exactly! This has been the one an only problem I've had on my 08 STI and Subaru Canada stepped up and gave my new pads and rotors. If this happens again they will fix it. This was probably due to a bad batch of brake pads.

5000kms.

Dan, could you possible be more of a hater? The frequency of these problems is EXTREMELY rare, all things considered. Add to the fact that many 08 drivers are NEW to the STi and performance cars in general, some of the quirks and noises are more paranoia and hearsay than true, genuine problems.

Just because you've read a few threads of people having issues here and there, does NOT mean the car is a lemon. There's bound to be a few that roll off the assembly line that will develop more problems than others, but this is true with ANY production car.

If you think Evos are more reliable, go right ahead with your blind delusions. My Evo IX (although pretty reliable considering the boatloads of problem-related threads I lost count of on EvoM) it developed more creaks, squeaks, and rattles at 15k miles than my 04 STi had at 30k+. I and MANY others have had a flawless experience with the 08 STi. The Evo 08 "out handles" the STi ONLY because of the S-AYC, it's a RIDICULOUSLY expensive little unit that has a LOT that can go wrong over a standard LSD. I won't even go into the overpriced twin-clutch mess in the MR, the 6sp of earlier models was enough of a fail for everything but daily driving.

Edit:
If I run into a small problem, you're damn right I'm going to fix it myself because I'm not a whining baby that goes running to the dealer to claim "warranty this because I'm not going to waste my time!"... Which is a little ironic and lazy... If there's a problem that EVERYONE is having, or is expensive enough that I really need to make the dealer fix it, then of course I'll take it to them. Some people seem to expect perfection, I'm a realist.

This is a rediculous thread. Brembos make noise. the 350z /G35c had like the worrrrrst noises, and my 350z track model brembos didn't even stop that well give the fact that a sti weighs more and has the same size brakes. When they're cold and at low speed theyre gonna sound clunky...thats just how it is.
and oem pads/rotors as stated, always suck.

Whoa there! I don't buy the argument this noise is normal. I never experienced this with the Brembos on my 05 STi nor the Carbotechs on my Legacy GT. I've got 915 miles on the car and the brakes have worked perfectly until tonight. Tonight I was leaving the convenience store and drove over a small dip in the road and heard a quick "pop" sound from beneath the car. Drove the car a mile up the hill to my house and noticed this pretty horrible muffled grind/squeal during slow braking. The brakes were perfect until I heard the pop sound two minutes earlier! It makes the same sound as very glazed over pads running over rotors with hot spots. How could this happen in a matter of minutes? The car has been babied as I'm still breaking her in. The car is sitting at the dealers service door right now!

No I realize there may be some people with issues, but i think a looooot of other people who dont are just getting paranoid from normal sounds.

Exactly what happened on my case! Was going at a good clip saw a cop applied the brakes harder than normal and I heard a pop. Shortly after that is when the horrid loud grinding noise started.

Again this is not a normal performance brake noise that everyone thinks. Once you've heard the noise you'll know what we're talking about.

I think I just got some bad factory brake pads which cause hot spots on the rotors.

Honestly to me it wasn't a big deal. That is what a warranty for. If it becomes a re-occuring issue I'll deal with it then.

i just got my car today, 100 miles and the pads are grinding like hell. i think there is alot of brake dust on the side of the car too.
was someone gonna make a survey? this seems to be a pretty big problem.

should i try the brake pad bedding in procedure, or just get them replaced? should i try the procedure right after getting them replaced if i do get them replaced?

Even when bedded properly, you will not get these pads to stop dusting like crazy.

Dust will not make the pad grind, if anything dust will make them squeal. Try bedding them in, there's no harm in that unless the grinding noise you're referring to is absolutely godawful and seriously sounds like something is wrong. Check the rotor for visual wear (ie if there's a rock stuck in the caliper somewhere or something).

They will dust more than a normal street pad, so expect it. They will perform very well for everything you want except track days, no "street" pad will hold up to the heat from track sessions unless they're designed to do both.
