The loud grinding happened to me after a 100km trip down the highway, followed by some in-town stop and go traffic. It was so terrible sounding that my 7yr old kid looked afraid. I thought it was a stuck pebble and that my rotors would be scratched to crap. After sitting for 5hrs, the noise was gone. I am afraid to hear it again cause it does sound like the car is seriously protesting.

I have Brembos on my bike. On the times where I've had to nail the brakes I swear it sounds like cicadas in the trees but it's coming from the brakes.

No issues with popping out of gear though (see below).

Uneven rotors could be crud on the rotor or a warped rotor. Do you nail the brakes (get them really hot) and then hit water/ice/snow? Quenching hot rotors is bad mojo. Do you ride the brakes (glazing the pads and possibly depodisiting pad smoodge on the rotors? Neither of these situations causes "sound", they tend to cause pulsing through the pedals when using the brakes.

The cicada sound doesn't affect performance. It's just the nature of the pad design. When I went to Carbon-Lorrain pads on the bike, the sound went away.

The sound I hear drives me crazy. Certainly nothing I'd expect out of a $40K car. My 2007 never made this noise. My local dealer stated that it is normal. I find it hard to believe. To all those who are having this issue, rub your finger along the rotor and let me know how it feels....mine are completely uneven like they are old warn rotors.

Also, anyone having an issue of 2nd gear popping out while downshifting? It happens 2-3 times a day now. Any input would be appreciated!!

Same here. I took mine back the day I got it and they said it was rust b/c the car had been sitting at the lot. And the grinding is VERY annoying and only at slow stops.

As for the rotors, it's only the front rotors. Feel the back rotors then feel the front. The front definitely feel "used." I noticed the rotor feeling when I had ~250 miles on mine.

Thank you all for the reply. For all of you 2008 STI car owners: Subaru just sent a memo to ALL worldwide dealers to stop selling STI's starting with a certain VIN #. All STI's with this VIN# on up are subject to an engine knock. Call your local dealer to find if your car falls into this category. Mine doesn't fall into it, but I have to deal with crappy brakes and a 2nd gear that wont stay put!! Might have to go the EVO X route if these problems persist!!

Same here. I took my car in for a roadtest with a subaru tech. After he heared the breake noise, he examed my
brakes.

The noise is definitely not normal, it is different from the type of noise made from high performacne brakes.

Surprisingly, one of the front brake pad (which made that terrible metal on metal grinding sound described by many members here) was cracked.

I was given a rental car immediately because the car is not safe to drive. Subaru will repalce the problem pad under wrannty.

Anyone who got this noise should go to your local subaru service department and let them check your front brake pads ASAP.

PS: I saw HRCboy's car today at richmond subaru

I suspected it was something like that. It's especially noticable on slow speed stops. I feel the brakes don't have that intial bite anymore and rotors are wearing really rough.

Just called my dealer they are aware of the problem now. They are ordering new brake pads for me.

Freeman.. are you the other White 08 STI that was pull in the lot yesterday and you didn't say Hi?? hahaha.

Good choice in colour.

I saw your car,but i didn't see the driver.

I drove my friend's GT3 before and after the roadtest with a subaru tech at richmond. GT3 also made some noise from its PCCB brake system at slow speed, but it is nothing similar to the type of noise our cars are making during slow speed stop.

Yes. After some driving, our brakes don't have that intial bite anymore, and they start to make loud noise. It is kind of embarrassing to stop my car at a RED light because all
pedestrians would look at my car in a strange way.

Is ur car still there? They said they don't have the brake pads in stock and I'll have to wait till monday.

My car is still in their shop, that's why they had to give me a rental car for the weekend. I was told the brake pads will be in stock on Monday.

I am teaching my friend to fully appreciate his GT3 during the last a few weeks becuase it is his first manual car

It should be a sweet track machine once he master the driving skills in ? years

Just got back from my dealer. Confirmation that the brake pad is cracking and uneven wear on the corners of the pads. New Pads are on order along with machining of the rotors.

My mechanic took it out for a test drive and says that a regular WRX brakes better than my car.

So something is definitely wrong.
