My does the same thing. I didn't worry about it and just chalked it up to performance brakes.

Nope, do it after, you will get some dusting after the bed-in.

it usually happens after a bit of driving

my 08 has the same metal on metal grinding. it's only like the last few feet before coming to a stop. and it's definitly a grinding sound, not the usual sqeaking. my previous sti's didn't make this sound.

Thanks for the correction. Should have said firm enough to almost activate ABS.

It sounds normal but these things are difficult to diagnose on the Internet. The previous generation experienced this because of the sport rotors/pads. If you have lingering concerns then I might ask the dealership.

I know exactly what you are talking about... I had that just happen with my brakes, it was a very loud and low humming noise. THIS WAS NOT THE SOUND OF PERFORMANCE BRAKES! This was unlike the normal low metal grinding sound.

I took it in to the dealer and it went away after a few hard stops. I think something got lodge in the brakes or the pads got a bit glazed. I few hard stops should clean it up.

Interesting to say the least...

ditto here! same grinding noise , sounds like rocks stuck in the pads ! took it to the dealer and they said do some hard stops and that should get rid of the brake dust build up. I 'm at 950 miles ( just did my first oil change) and that sound comes and goes typically with low speed slow stops then goes away after a hard brake effort. waiting to see what happens after a few more miles...

The brakes on the new STI are a bit on the noisy side.
After install of the coilovers it got even louder as more noise made it into the cabin. But its nothing out of the ordinary. Just sounds like any other highly metallic pad.

So I haven't really had much brake noise in the past few days until last night... I went out and did some spirited driving on some twisty back roads in the area. After about 30-40 minutes of cruising at 35-55mph, and braking/downshifting at most every corner, the brakes made considerably more noise when using them for non-spirited purposes. i.e. Braking at a stop sign on my way to the gas station. Anytime I came to a stop slowly/comfortably, it made a horrible grinding noise.

Unless I waited until the very last second and mashed the brakes at the stop sign (which would probably arouse the attention of the local cops who camp certain intersections) then it seemed to make way too much noise than it should; to the point where I felt bad using my brakes at all, like I was hurting the car.

I don't think I've ever heard anythign like this while braking. Only on cold mornings , and only during the first brake is there the slightest bit of noise.

Are the braking systems between 2006 and 2008 the same? I hear they are nearly identical, with the only differnce being that the 2008 have .3 inch wider front discs?
