No, I think you got the gist, just not sure how asking a poster how much his parents paid for his ride, without knowing who paid for the ride, was not really going to provide me with the information I expected to be provided given the title and poll of the thread.

Personally, I think it is because most 18 year olds can't afford insurance on a car like this @ ~ $200/month for an 18 yr old, plus a downpayment, plus $400-$600 payments per month (depending on downpayment), and still have time to go to highschool/college while working. I also don't know many financing companies that would allow an 18 year old to get a loan of that size without a co-signer. I know at 18, being able to afford a $35K-$39K car certainly wasn't one of my options.

You aren't the first really young STI driver to get some older folks riled up and I'm sure you won't be the last.

Either way, I'm not knocking you. I'm just explaining why people think this way. Congrats on the car and welcome to the club.

That's great. The parents comment was a little snarky, but I was hoping if you did shell out the cash you would call me out on it. What Digital said was true - I can't imagine being able to swing insurance and car payments on a 35K car at 18. But if you are the one making the sacrifice (and let's face it, that is what buying a new car (and this poll) is all about, how much you like the car versus how much monetary damage you're willing to take to get it) nice job.

Yeah, he may be paying for the cars monthly bills... as to where the parents are covering the insurance, etc. I feel it gives him motivation to work part time and pay off a car he loves. And maybe decided he'd go to a junior college or a college close to home where he could commuter, as to where his parents would love him to stay, so they would save A LOT of money. And maybe dont mind paying that 300 bucks a month on him, any whoo never know the dillioo!

I think a lot of parents are this way, at least good parents. Learning the value of money early on is vital, IMO.

Bingo, I bought my 05 STI used as I had always wanted one, but wasn't in a position financially to afford one before. After having recently gotten a nice promotion, I decided to trade-in and get a brand new one that I could call my own from the start. Plus I've always been a hatchback fanboy, my Civic SI was a hatch too.

So my standards for being able to afford a $35K plus automobile might be different than others.
You're right, and that's probably the difference between you and the 20 somethings buying this car. I do the 401k and the savings account too, but the only reason I took the dive and bought an 08 instead of just sticking to my 05 payments are because I've got an incredible deal on insurance ($1100 discount on my 6m premium due to good driving record). Oh and "playing" money is essential for anyone I think.

I honestly think that buying a brand new STI, even ~20 years old isn't a stupid decision as long as you make a budget first. The first time my parents forced me to make a budget (before I bought my first car ever) I absolutely hated it.... Now, I won't invest any large amount of money without budgeting for it first.

/tangent (I just had to go with it too)

I graduated with a EE/Physics degree, plenty of money after college. Unfortunately, my wife made me pay for a house and all sorts of s**t immediately after college so I had to stick with my 02 WRX until just recently. I guess it's a tradeoff for her providing two beautiful children.

Hey guys, I've asked nicely to drop the subject of 18 year olds buying/getting STI. The subject only creates arguments, name calling, and isn't what this site is about. Anymore posts about it will just be deleted.

Thanks.

I'm 34 and my wife is 32. Listing us both since she likes it and drives it as much as I do. Picked the STI because nothing else matched up under high performance hatch/wagon with a manual, rear wheel drive and semi affordable. The S6 Avant was a runner up but wanted something new and not used this time around....

Wow, I was so close to declaring an engineering major since I love math, but I just really enjoy accounting/finance. It does seem like most engineering jobs pay more out of college than accounting. It's taken me eight years to get to the point where ~$40K cars are possible for me to afford.

Well, seems like you really have your priorities together. Wifes and women in general don't really understand why a car is so important to a man, so they will always make you pay for other things first before upgrading your ride. That has always been my experience, as well as my male friends. But congrats for sticking it out and making sure the wife was kept happy. It will make owning your 08 STI all the more rewarding I think.
