I don't. The plug is accessible. I just remove the two rear bolts and bend it forward to reach the filter, let the oil run down it and into my pan and wipe up the leftover with shop towels. Haven't had any issues of any residue burning or smoking in 35K miles.

Any filter recommendations for this first time around? I'm at 1100miles and was going to do it this weekend...

OEM...are they still using the white leaky ones or did they fix that? I stocked up on the black ones long ago.

I can't understand the allure of DIY oil change. I used to do it all the time, but it is just such a hassle. Plus I have a real job now and can afford it.

Why do ANYTHING yourself? It's pride in your work and knowing that you did it right. I can't understand what the hassle is. I too have a real job and have had a real job for many years. Just because I can afford it doesn't mean I'm going to throw my money away when it can be put towards other things. I'm all for paying professionals to tackle certain projects that I simply don't have the expertise, tools, or time for because everyone needs to earn a living, but simple things oil changes falls along the lines of doing my own laundry and making my own bed.

when i had my '04 i drove to all the local auto zones and kragens.
none of them would accept used oil AND filter.

maybe you lived in an area where you had better service. unfortunately i do not.
they seem to make recycling this stuff as hard and complicated as possible. you'd think that one would try to promote "being green" huh? i wonder how many people just dump it down the drain.

however, my dealership is two miles down the road from me, and unlike some other places, these guys know what they are doing and are treating me and my car right. three thumbs up for them

I lived in West LA. I agree that they should make it easier especially in Nor Cal where all the hippies and tree huggers reside. Then again, it's typical "punishment" tactics to convert people to use other means of transportation I guess. My closet dealer was staffed with a$$ clowns. I now live near a top notch dealership that I have less issues about bringing my car there. Had them do diff and tranny fluid and coolant, but since I have everything I need for oil changes, I'd still rather do those myself.

DIY if you consider driving it to the dealership at 700 miles for them to swap in dino oil. I paid for this one because it wasn't a scheduled service, but the next 2 years/24k miles of routine services are "free" as part of the deal I made when buying my 08 DGM.

I really don't think I'm throwing money away. The difference in cost (>$30) between doing it yourself and paying someone else is not worth my time. I would rather spend my free time with my family or playing COD4. You prioritize things differently than I do and that is likely why you don't understand how I perceive changing my own oil to be a hassle.

Crap so that shroud has to come off? I make just cut a large hole in it, or make a removable panel.

My "don't understand" comment was a retort to your not understanding the "allure" of a DIY oil change. It's all good though. I know you may think it's a hassle now, but the hassle of having a stripped oil pan, drain plug, or oil filter adapter is a lot worse. I see the DIY oil change as simple insurance, but to each their own.

My dealer gives free oil changes for life so probably the first 2 changes, they will do. Then I'll do it after that.

I changed mine at 1500 miles with Mobil 1. I personally prefer to do oil myself because I am a car guy and love to always know whats going on with my vehicle. I have had numerous occurances where the oil change places screwed up something, either torqued my drain plug too tightly or never changed the filter. Now when I am paying for something, I expect to get excellent service, in which I have not as previous. I just don't seeing paying someone for doing a half @$$ job. Just my 2c
