Well there you go. I humbly admit my wrong-atudes...so why did they make it heavier?

I believe that's a consequence resulting from a more rigid design.... It's not much heavier though... At least its not a drastic change in weight compared to the difference between the EVO IX vs. X...

Subaru is not winning because Subaru does not spend what the other manufacturers spend (I'm guessing). It's not because their car is a sedan...that's just plain ridiculous.
Ridiculous ?...... I think you need to get your facts striaght.

Well well, I see you didn't see my retraction...however this car is by no means a homolgomation car. The STi once was a homolgomation special, but it no longer is.

I agree... It's not a "homologation special" by definition, but the STi is still a homologation car at least in Group N P-WRC, and its overall shape is still an advantage over the outgoing model for both P-WRC and WRC... It would be nice though if FIA rules would still necessitate manufacturers to make one (2008 22B hatch yay!) but strict emissions standards, rule changes and other factors prevent that from happening... (T.T)

It's only 22lbs heavier than the '07 yet gained side curtain airbags and 18x8.5 wheels with 245 tires (vs 17x7.5" on your '04/17x8" on the '05+). That only would probably add up to over 22lbs. So it's really not heavier if you were to factor in the same equipment as the '07.

A little bit more info on the homologation issue with the STi....

Model SUBARU CBA-GRB (STi specific chassis code)

Chassis 5 door AWD 6MT

Length 4,415mm

Width 1,795mm

Height 1,475mm

Wheelbase 2,625mm

Unladen weight 1,470kg

Engine EJ20 2.0 litre DOHC 16 valve
AVCS turbo

Maximum output 227 k-W(308ps) / 6400 rpm

Maximum torque 422 N.m(43.0kg-m) / 4400 rpm

Fuel tank 60 litters

Steering Rack and Pinion 13 : 1

Suspension Front : Strut
Rear : Double Wishbone

Brakes Front and Rear : Ventilated Discs

* FIA Group N Homologation Number N5714

Comparing to the previous 2007 model, a shortened overall length(-50mm) and rear overhang(-120mm), widen tracks(Front +40mm, Rear +45mm), change in weight distribution to the front and rear of the car, plus optimization of the centre of gravity and roll centre contribute to the improvement of the handling of the vehicle. An increased competitive edge is the aim for this new model

Yeah WRC doesn't need homologation but Group N does, and Subaru is still huge in Group N. Also, the whole point of a manufacturer competing in WRC is to get people to buy their cars. And people are more likely to buy the road car if it looks similar to the WRC car.

saw pics...ugly

saw it at the dealer..and cringed

i think when subaru put out the limited modles, it was a test into the mature market. but it backfired, because we who love this car snatched them all up...making SOA think a mature audience is interested...

look at the polls.....most of us here are 20-30 with minds to go fast with some luxury (over the evo)

bring the sedan back!

Not to mention it doesn't rattle like a tin can over every pothole on the road. At 75 mph the interior of my 08 STI is 5 dB quieter than my uncles stock 05 STi. That is a huge difference - to put it into perspective, to increase the volume of your stereo by 5 dB you need to nearly quadruple the amplifier power (every 3 dB requires a doubling of power). I'll take an extra 20 pounds of sound deadening and more airbags; you can gain back the performance decrease by running an extra .05 psi of boost...

It's sad to think some guys here are so disgusted by the idea of the STi being a hatch that they outright either totally ignore, or are str8 blinded from noticing the advantages the new design has in both performance as well as utility, just so they can have a Sedan with a big wing on it... Isn't that kind of "mindset" one of the attributes of being "Riceboy"?

I started to like Subarus in the fall of 2001 when I first saw a WRX Wagon. Almost bought one, then the STi came out with that stupid wing on the back, so I didn't want the WRX any more. So I ended up buying an M3. I always admired the STi for the performance but it is totally impractical being a sedan. There are lots of nicer fast sedans and coupes. Making the STi a wagon in '08 has me back on board and I am trying to decide between it and a S4 Avant, which is 15-20k more and not quite as quick.

riceboy good laugh!

anyways.... i am not against the hatch...i am again the fact that there is ONLY hatch....

and the tail lights...not a fan of led....i prefer the solid 06-07 years (i have not researched after market lights yet)

besides...videos that i have seen comparing the evo x to the sti 08 show alot more overseer in the subies...

last is the electronics....i know they are trying to appeal to our parents....but like they say..the more you have...the more you have to go wrong!

It would be nice to also have an optional Sedan version of the 08, maybe using the current 08 Sedan's body, or totally making a "widebody" version of the new Sedan. Doing the latter will probably lead to Subaru having to make a whole new chassis code. Anyone with Photoshop skills up for the challenge?
