I think the 08 is more mod friendly because Subaru didnt get away from the previous powertrian. The Evo X on the other hand uses a different motor and from what I heard it does not respond well to mods at this point. I have driven them both and you will be able to find numerous reviews in comparing them both by just a quick search. Just remember Subaru demolishes Mitsu when it comes to safety, trust me! Good luck with your decision!

Currently, there are quite a few Stage 1/Stage 2 set ups for the 08 STi... Tuners have yet to crack the ECU on the EVO X, but looking through posts from evolutionm, the new 4B11T seems to respond well to minor modifications and increased boost while still being untuned... I would give the advantage to the EVO X once the ECU is raped. Keep in mind that you will definitely need to watch for Transmission problems on the new EVO as they seem to be pretty fragile... On the other hand, the new STi seems to have a pretty strong transmission, and would seem to definitely hold up to something like a Stage 2 setup.

I would recommend going for the EVO X GSR if you plan to modify it heavily... Just make sure to beef up the transmission....

I'd recommend the 08 STi if you plan on doing relatively light mods like a Stage1/Stage2 setup.... I hear the car is already loads of fun with just these mods....

I reckon you should avoid the EVO X MR like the plague unless you intend to keep the car stock (power-wise)...

While it is a very good point that the X is a new motor, everything I've read to date suggests plenty of basic mod friendliness:

PERRIN EVO X Test and Tune part 1 - evolutionm.net
AMS EVO X Engineering thread... Big update on page 3! - Page 11 - evolutionm.net

I'm sure there are plenty of other threads with pertinent tuning info on EvoM.

If you are wanting to go all out mods, over 350 WHP, you may want to stick with the STI for it's proven motor. On the other hand, if you want something different, and don't require the utility of the STI 5-door and/or don't plan on going for crazy mods, I'd suggest the Evo is a fantastic alternative.

Ultimately, you need to drive both to decide which you like best! : ) Perhaps you'll decide there's no advantage to a new STI or Evo over your 05!?

Then again, with the 135. G37, 370Z right around the corner, cayman S's getting more reasonable in the used market, etc... there are plenty of other alternatives if you dont' require AWD or turbo lag (I mean, power).

This is good advice... I forgot to mention in my post above. Since you already have an STI, unless you can't stand it any more -- in which case the Evo/STI might not be the best choice : ) -- you may consider waiting until the 09 models are out (paint chip issues, tune issues, etc)... especially if you would consider the MR (SST).

I'd like to add that I've also heard rumors on EvoM.net regarding some kind of PIN code that is needed from Mitsubishi in order to crack the ECU... I hear once obtained or entered in, the warranty is instantly voided...

Though unfortunate if true, that makes me feel lucky that I could just reflash my 08 STi back to stock if ever I need to take advantage of my warranty....

on my 2005 sti my mods are ecuteck, kn short ram,bov 740cc injectors, fuel rail. and tuning. i was gonna put gt35 turbo kit. i dont hate my car i just like to change every 4 yrs.
ive been beating my car, lauching at the trak at 6rpm now i have 91000 and never had a problem and still using my original clucht. will the evo take that kind of driving??
im still confuse about 2008 sti, i like it but something is holding me back , same goes for the evo, i do want a awd car.

search would help out. look through the journals of the 08 guys. The new STi is taking well to mods, but I see the price in comparison to the X similar to previous years. The price to mod the STi is just always going to be more expensive I guess.

If you want to go troll Evolutionm.net and checkout the new X and what tuners are doing over there. I know the community is pretty impressed with the new engines reaction to mods. I believe with simple bolt ons they are getting 350whp and similar ftlbs.

research will help

I like both cars; coming from the M3 and a C5. But no dealer would go under invoice on the base STI. I ended up with the Evo X for $1500 under invoice which was thousands less than the STI. Again, both cars are amazing performers, each with their strengths, but I went with the Evo X because the price was right, stock handling a bit sharper, and nice base equipment (Recaro/Enkei). Can't go wrong with either car though.

If you plan on modding the cars they will both have there stong points.
Out of the box the EVO is slower, but handles better.
The STi has a bit more usable power, but the handling is not as good as the EVO.

Throw on some coilovers on the STi and you have a good car.
Up the power on the EVO and you have good car.

Eather way you will be happy.

Just remember, the EVo has crap interior. And the STi will make all the local soccer moms, and Mazda's jelous. So its all up to you in the end

What did you pay for your Evo?

I was going to buy the base GSR with no options for $1100 under invoice at $30,589, but decided at the last minute to get the one that had the aero kit (add $1999 list) and the interior sport kit (add $399 list), and paid $32,100 for it. Invoice with the options was $33,641 and MSRP was $36,078. Good deals to be had on the Evos.

Just want to chime in on the interior of both cars.... In my opinion, interior quality is about the same in both cars, both good and bad aspects. Compared to a G37 that I was also cross-shopping, both the STI and Evo interiors feel rather "low budget", and in an entirely different league, even though the prices of these three cars are in the same bracket. Neither car seems to be ahead in this category. For me, the leather seating surfaces in the STI were really nice. But, the Recaros in the Evo are hard to beat.
