I think you´ll be happy with either of them. Both bring something the other doesn´t have.

On the "mod friendly" part, I´m quite sure that the Evo X engine has the upper arm there because unlike ///M Power, who said "and from what I heard it does not respond well to mods at this point", I´ve heard completely the opposite. But the STI isn´t far behind. The 4B11T motor is turning out to be pretty good modwise, but however some have mentioned that it´s not as quick at lower RPMs as the STI and also loses a bit of power on higher RPM´s (in stock form).

In other words, it´s a bit lazier than the previous motor and current STI motor but it does accept mods more happily. I´m no engine specialist and I must admit I do not know alot about the new Evo X motor, but this is just what I´ve read in numerous articles and websites. I think I read on Evolutionm that the MR will not be a mod friendly car because of the SST transmission. Mainly because it won't accept, or can't handle, much more than the stock tune.

Practicality, no question. STI hands down. The trunk of the Evo X is a joke and you can hardly fit a kitten in there. Put a bell around it´s neck and you can´t close it. The STI on the other hand, thanks to the new hatch body and foldable rear seats, is alot more spacious.

I sat in one (non-Recaro version) and felt as the dashboard was lower, steering wheel was lower and just everything more... cramped. There was more headroom, but I felt as they had lowered everything in the interior. Anyone else noticed this?

I can give you some ups and downs about both of them, from owners perspective, in a few weeks But not maybe alot regarding mods.

If you like your subaru. And want a sure thing. Get the new 08 STi. Its a sick car.

The Evo X I wasn't feeling the online pictures. But when I saw one in person It quickly changed my mind. They look tough. The negative is changing of the engine etc. And the availability of parts will be limited for a little while.

Rocko, I cannot speak to the Evo's mod friendliness but on my '08, I added an AccessPORT and a Cobb catted downpipe and got about 60 more ft/lbs of torque at the wheels. With this setup, you don't even need a Pro-Tune since the Cobb maps have been verified to be spot on for the above setup. So you get that kind of power for about $1,300+tax in parts. That and you maintain reliability and the ability to go back to stock whenever you want.

You also need to ask what kind of utility you need from your car. Is the Evo going to give you enough interior room. For me it was a no-brainer. With one kid and another on the way, no way I would have been able to live with the Evo. Throw in legendary Subaru reliability and safety and the choice was easy for me. I didn't even need to drive the Evo since it was out of contention from the get go. BUT if you are considering both, I highly recommend you drive both.

Good luck and keep us posted!
